Man Charged in Oak Brook Bank Robbery

Andrew Johnston faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Investigators say they have the man suspected in robbing the Fifth Third Bank branch in Oak Brook last week.

According to the criminal complaint filed Nov. 1 and unsealed Wednesday, Andrew J. Johnston of Wood Dale stole $1,092 from the bank, located at 1603 W. 16th Street.

According to the complaint, at 2:45 p.m. Oct. 29, Johnston demanded $5,000 in large bills from a teller, who removed $50 and $100 bills from the drawer and placed them on the counter. The defendant allegedly demanded more money. The teller complied with additional cash, saying that's all there was.

As the suspect left the bank, another teller followed him into the parking lot and saw him go into a residential area, according to the complaint. The teller then saw a dark Ford Taurus speed away, but not before noticing the license plate number.

The Taurus was stopped by Oakbrook Terrace police about two blocks away. It was allegedly driven by an acquaintance of Johnston, who was not in the vehicle. The acquaintance allegedly became nervous while waiting for Johnston and drove away, according to the complaint.

Police recovered in a wooded area nearby the clothing the suspect was wearing in the surveillance video of the robbery. The suspect also was seen on surveillance video at a nearby business making a phone call, then leaving the area by cab. The suspect allegedly was dropped off at a coffee shop on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn. The business owner and the cab driver allegedly identified Johnston in a lineup.
