ReplyI think we need to know EXACTLY how much of the flooding that has been experienced in the past few years would be alleviated by the proposal to convert District 205 land that our children use everyday at Bryan, Jackson and Madison. It's hard to imagine that these few retention areas would make a significant enough difference to justify the money that will be spent and the impact on the children who attend these schools. It's easy to say it has worked in other places, but these locations are clearly in low lying areas, so they are simply not going to drain quickly and be reusable again. I question whether these fields will in fact ever be usable once converted. All the fields in town were unplayable for weeks since the last rain, and they are not used for retention, so how long would it take for these retention areas to be usable? The children at these schools shouldn't lose their play areas simply because we can't get the appropriate sewer infrastructure in place. I really hope all other options are properly vetted before an idea like this is forced through. I would hate to undertake this plan only to find out it has minimal impact.

To Gary and all the other angry people on here complaining about the police: what the individuals in question were doing is against the Elmhurst Code -- period. If you don't like it, then go tell the city council the Code should be changed, but don't blame the police for doing their job, which is to enforce the Code. If people want to discharge weapons on their property, there are plenty of places they can do it, just not here.

WRONG -- discharging a bb or pellet gun within the city is illegal. Read the code and educate yourself. If the police receive a call about a weapon being discharged, they respond accordingly. Did you not just see what happened in Boston -- an MIT officer was shot in his car for seemingly no reason. Do you blame them for erring on the side of caution?

When someone is firing a weapon, the onus shouldn't be on the neighbor to figure out what type of gun is being used and then measure their response accordingly. The onus should be on the person owning the gun to be educated and not break the law in the first place. I would have done the same thing. This isn't some type of old fashioned bb gun we're talking about, these look like real guns. Actually, some of them look like assault weapons. I've seen guys walking around the neighborhood using them and I can tell you it is very threatening, particularly given the number of gun-related incidents in our society these days. If I had known it was illegal, I would have called a long time ago. We need to err on the side of caution in a highly populated area with children everywhere. There is no place for this type of behavior in this town. If people want to use these weapons, they can do it in a place where it is legal.

ReplyCome on, Al! You use this site all the time. Are you seriously going into hiding for 4 weeks before the election and refusing to answer these simple questions?? Particularly the question about seeking multiple public positions, which your mayoral candidate is taking credit for being the number one advocate against? Don't you think voters deserve to know your position?? I'm embarrassed for you.

Agreed - that landscaped median needs to be removed immediately. All it does is further complicate an already dangerously congested intersection.
