On Feb. 19 and Feb. 22, the state will stage public hearings to discuss a new concealed carry handgun law for Illinois.
Gun control hearings will convene before an Illinois House committee later this month, says Speaker Mike Madigan, and there will be much talk about a new concealed carry law. One hearing will take place in Chicago on Feb. 22, at the Michael A. Bilandic Building in Chicago. The other will be in Springfield on Feb. 19 at the Capitol. “In light of events in recent months in Illinois and in other parts of the country, it’s appropriate and necessary that we give a full vetting to proposed state legislation on this matter," reads a statement from Madigan. "These hearings will provide an opportunity for gun-safety advocates, gun-rights supporters and members of the law enforcement community to offer their views and argue their cases to …

TRACE Act improves the ATF’s ability to identify the source of illicit guns and pursue gun traffickers, Quigley said.
U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5, Chicago) introduced the Trafficking Reduction and Criminal Enforcement Act Friday, which cracks down on the illegal gun market by improving gun tracking data. The bill also repeals the Tiahrt Amendments, which hamper law enforcement’s pursuit of criminals who buy and sell illegal guns. “The TRACE Act is the type of commonsense gun control reform we need to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people,” Quigley said in a prepared statement. “Our law enforcement officials face a sea of illegal weapons flooding our streets, but the TRACE Act will close the loopholes that allow criminals to obtain illicit guns and choke off the supply to traffickers.” For nearly a decade, Quigley said, the …

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for a change.
When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws. In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check." What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that …

Local threats emerge in wake of Newtown shooting, underscoring vulnerabilities and prompting discussions of gun control and guns for teachers.
As our nation's governors call for a moment of silence Friday morning in memory of the 20 students and seven adults killed Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn., local police and school officials are seeking to reassure people that efforts to protect their children would be redoubled. Especially concerning are the newly discovered vulnerabilities and wave of outright threats to Chicago-area communities in the wake of the shootings. Parents and educators everywhere are talking about school security. Here's a glimpse of what's taken place this week. In Downers Grove, parents discovered that schoolhouse doors were unlocked and flooded the district with calls. The school district decided to lock the doors this week and install temporary buzzers. …

Mike I said nothing about outlawing guns. I just think we should start over without the right to bear arms. In 2008 Japan had 14 gun deaths, the UK had less than 100, and the US had 12,000. There clearly is more than one lunatic out there. You can't shoot someone without a gun.   more ›
