City Council Candidates Tackle Finances, Environment and More at League Forum Sunday

We're starting with aldermen candidates; check back for coverage of the school board portion of the forum.

Elmhurst residents could have been doing a lot of different things on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but a good many of them filled Elmhurst City Council chambers to hear what their candidates for city, park and school board have to offer. Elmhurst League of Women Voters, sponsor of Sunday's forum, invited all contested candidates running in the April 9 Consolidated Elections to answer questions in public—and for the local cable channel. The forum will be aired at a later date. By the time alderman and mayoral candidates were on the dais, League representatives were hauling in more chairs for the observers standing in the back. Candidates in wards 2, 3 and 6 (Norman Leader, Michael Bram and Jim Kennedy, respectively) are uncontested and were …

hey Sam Abney, you might want to double check your facts before you post any more rubbish about all those closed door meetings that are supposedly legal. looks like pete's hand picked counsel (the elmhurst city attorney) really stepped on it this time. and all us taxpayers are going to be left holding the bag once again. i wonder if "acting" mayor levin will find some gravitas and actually make a…   more ›

Darlene Heslop Withdraws Her Challenge to School Board Candidates' Nominating Papers

Jim Collins and Emily Bastedo can continue their campaigns for District 205 Board.

The Elmhurst District 205 Electoral Board hearing scheduled for 4 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 11, has been canceled. The hearing originally was scheduled to hear petition challenges filed by Elmhurst resident Darlene Heslop against two School Board candidates, board President Jim Collins and newcomer Emily Bastedo. According to an announcement from the District 205 administrative office, the hearing was canceled because Heslop withdrew her objections to the nomination papers of both candidates. Yes she has the right to take action if there is merit to her claim. This was a meritless claim that the district spent thousands of dollars dealing with. If she is going to file these claims she should do all her homework first and make sure there is merit to them. She should reimburse the district for the money that was spent on this. What a waste of taxpayer money.   more ›

Alderman Pat Wagner will Remain on the Ballot in the Consolidated Election

Objections to Wagner's nominating petitions dismissed Monday.

Fourth Ward resident Darlene Heslop's objections to 7th Ward Alderman Pat Wagner's nominating petitions were unanimously dismissed by Elmhurst's Electoral Board Monday on the grounds that Heslop does not live in Wagner's ward.  Wagner is the incumbent candidate running to retain his seat in the April 9 Consolidated Election. Heslop claimed that Wagner's nominating petitions were inconsistent with respect to how he referred to the position he was seeking. But Wagner's attorney, Michael Botti, presented a motion to dismiss the objections, which was ultimately accepted by the Electoral Board. Botti referred to state election law and argued that only residents of the 7th Ward could file objections to petitions from candidates in that ward, a …

It is now obvious that "Angry Woman" is the same character as "Not Mayor Gutenkauf". A very mature and intelligent response back to me. Alderman Steve Morley Makes it Official: He's Running for Mayor

Morley cited TIF, electricity aggregation and a flat tax levy as recent city accomplishments in which he takes pride.

Flanked by his family and "Morley for Mayor" signs, 6th Ward Alderman Steve Morley announced to a room of more than 60 people at Wilder Mansion Monday that he is running for mayor. Morley, who has served the 6th Ward since 2007, was introduced by 4th Ward Alderman Kevin York. Nine city aldermen showed up to support Morley, along with elected county and state officials. Elmhurst aldermen not in attendance included Diane Gutenkauf and Paula Pezza (1st Ward), 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Bram, and 7th Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner, who announced his own run for mayor in August. Morley pointed to his deep roots in Elmhurst. "I was born and raised in Elmhurst, attended Elmhurst schools, I'm a graduate of York High School," he said, adding that his …

Anyone find it interesting Alderman Kennedy, a big Morley endorser, is running for re-election at the same he is packing-up to move out of state? Are these the actions of honorable men? Even better, Morley isn't even his real name. I hope an enterprising journalist decides to research why he felt he needed to change his real name.   more ›

Expect a Number of New Faces to Lead Elmhurst Come Spring

Two aldermen, three School Board members and one park commissioner will not run for re-election in April.

The filing period closed at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, for candidates interested in running in the April 5 consolidated election for Elmhurst City Council, Park Board and District 205 School Board. One seat in each of Elmhurst's seven wards will be open, and a total of 13 residents have declared their intent to run. In the 1st Ward, incumbent Diane Gutenkauf will run against newcomer John Raniere. In the 2nd Ward, only Bob Dunn has filed to run for the seat currently held by Pat Shea, who will not seek re-election. Dannee Polomsky and Paul McLafferty will face off in the 3rd Ward; long-time alderman Susan Rose has decided not to run. The 4th Ward is the most crowded, with incumbent Steve Hipskind facing challengers Darlene Heslop and Mark …
