Hard-driving, Heart-warming Story of 'Fearless Freddie' Lorenzen Unfolds at Elmhurst Historical Museum

"The more we found out about Fred’s life and career, the more we knew this was an important story for us to bring to the public,” Curator Lance Tawzer said. Opening reception is Thursday, Jan. 31.

When you hear the list of accomplishments achieved by Elmhurst native “Fearless Freddie” Lorenzen, it’s hard to imagine that his story has remained under the radar: A new exhibit at the Elmhurst Historical Museum, “On the Road to Glory: Fred Lorenzen,” brings to light the story of Lorenzen, a York High School graduate who become one of early NASCAR’s prominent drivers and a long-time fan favorite. The exhibit, which opens Feb. 1 and runs through May 19 at EHM, traces the route of a fast-driving local kid who blazed a trail into the annals of NASCAR history as the growing sport emerged on the national scene in the 1960s. Update: Victim of Fatal Rollover Crash was 2001 York Graduate

Sheriff's Department is investigating; few details have been released.

Update: Memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at Humes Funeral Home, 320 W. Lake St., Addison. Read Ryan's obituary here. ---------------------------- The DuPage County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim of a Sunday rollover crash in Glen Ellyn as 28-year-old York High School graduate Ryan Giese of Addison. Elmhurst Unit District 205 officials have confirmed that Giese was a member of York's Class of 2001.  The Sheriff's Office reported that Giese was driving a Dodge Durango that rolled over on Route 53 at Arboretum Drive, just south of Butterfield Road in unincorporated Glen Ellyn, at 4:40 a.m Sunday, June 24. Giese was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. …
