York Senior Naha Named a National Merit Scholarship Winner

About 8,000 students nationwide earned the award, including 108 from Illinois.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced its 2013 Merit Scholar designees and $2,500 scholarship award-winners on Monday. Included on the list is York Community High School senior Ushasi Naha. Naha, who plans to study medicine in college, was named one of about 8,000 students nationwide who earned the award, including 108 from Illinois. According to an NMSC press release, winners are the finalists determined “to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies,” based on an appraisal of academic records, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, a recommendation and a finalist’s own essays. Newsweek High School Rankings Map: York at No. 449

The magazine's 2013 report out this week recognizes several Illinois schools.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked York High School at No. 449 among high schools in the country, with a "Newsweek Score" of 3.25. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about York's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate …

U.S. News: York High School Ranks Among Best in State

York ranked 29th out of 667 Illinois high schools, according to the annual list published by U.S. News and World Report.

York Community High School is ranked among the best high schools in the state, according to a report published Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report. York ranked 29th out of 667 public high schools in Illinois. “We are proud of the ranking from US News and World Report, a reflection of a commitment to excellence from our students, staff, parents and community," York Principal Diana Smith said Tuesday. What a joke. So the York principal is proud of a 72% proficiency in reading and 73% proficiency in Math - percentages calculated by the magazine. York Named Gold Medal Finalist in National GRAMMY Signature School Program

Only three high schools nationwide achieved Gold Medal status.

The York High School music program, under the leadership of Performing and Visual Arts Division Chairman Bill Riddle, is one of three Gold Medal finalists in the GRAMMY Signature School program. The GRAMMY Foundation announced last week that 10 schools nationwide have been selected as GRAMMY Signature Schools for 2013 and were awarded cash grants totaling $56,000. The GRAMMY Signature Schools program recognizes top U.S. public high schools that are making an outstanding commitment to music education. Each of 10 GRAMMY Signature Schools will receive a custom award and a grant to benefit their music programs. The top three schools are designated Gold recipients. York Grad Garret Sparks Signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs

Sparks grew up playing hockey at Elmhurst YMCA and on the asphalt at Eldridge Park.

York High School graduate Garret Sparks, who in January was on the USA Junior Hockey Team that won the Gold in Russia, has been signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a three-year entry-level contract, the Maple Leafs announced Tuesday. Sparks, a goaltender, appeared in 60 games with the Ontario Hocky League's Guelph Storm this season, amassing a record 36 wins for the season. According to the official site of the Maple Leafs, Sparks led all OHL goaltenders in games played, wins and shutouts, was fifth in save percentage and seventh in goals against average. His 36 wins and seven shutouts were single-season Guelph Storm records, and he was named the OHL's Goaltender of the Month in January, and the Canadian Hockey League's Goaltender of the…

York High School Students Receive a Slew of Awards and Recognitions

Congratulations to participants in National Merit, Skills USA, IDEA, Science Olympiad and more!

A number of York High School students have earned recognition for high academic achievement. And the school and District 205 have earned a couple of recognitions, too. National Merit Finalists   Six York High School students are among 16,000 semifinalists who have met the requirements to advance to finalist standing in the National Merit Corporation scholarship competition.   Named National Merit Finalists are Karen Altergott, Caroline Dierksheide, Evan Fabry, Emma Fisher, Ushasi Naha and Matthew Wilbur.   A Certificate of Merit was presented to them at a recognition breakfast earlier this month. York Basketball Season Ends With Loss to Oak Park in Sectional Semifinals

Oak Park-River Forest turns it on in the fourth to upset the Dukes and end championship hopes.

York Varsity Basketball Team could not hold on against Oak Park-River Forest in the Sectional Semifinals at Schaumburg High School March 7. It was close all four quarters, but OP-RF came on strong with a 3-point play and a 3-pointer, while holding York scoreless for most of the fourth quarter. York (22-8) lost 43-39 after winning its first regional title since 2006. Read about the game on the Daily Herald website, or watch it on High School Cube. York High School Fine Arts Week Begins March 4

Students will get to see lots of local talent during the day, and the public is invited to a talent show Wednesday and Thursday night at York.

Fine Arts Week provides York students the opportunity to hear student, collegiate and professional groups from the Chicagoland area.  The mission of Fine Arts Week is to expose students to the many different forms of artistic expression. The week includes performances by Elmhurst College and College of DuPage, local musicians, and performances from several of the student performing arts groups, including Jazz Band, Speech Team, Sketch Comedy Club, Amateur Musicians Club and Group Interpretation.  The events of the week are largely planned, organized and directed by the students.
