Flags Honor Each York Alum Killed in Service

York Student Council encourages all veterans and their families to attend a free breakfast Saturday.

York High School students arrived this morning to a flag display along the school's the circle drive in honor of Veterans Day. Each flag carries the name of a York graduate who died in the service to the country. Students started the day with an all-school Veterans Day assembly at 7:45 a.m. with presentations from veterans, York students and administrators. On Saturday, Nov. 10, York will sponsor its annual Veterans Day breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria, 355 W. St. Charles Road. All veterans and their families are welcome to this free event. For information and to RSVP, call Student Council Advisor Matt Moran at (630) 617-2400, Ext. 7285, and leave a message indicating how many people will be attending. Moran also can be …

This is wonderful. In my day, shamefully, many college-age people spit (literally) on returning Viet Nam veterans. It appears these students at York have their heads on straight. Good for them.   more ›

Veterans Day Ceremony at Wilder Park Dedicated to All Who Have Served

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard—all are in our hearts, all have earned our gratitude.

Veterans, families and city officials gathered Friday at Wilder Park Veterans Memorial for the annual assembly of gratitude and remembrance for all those who have served. The brisk morning of 11-11-11 held special significance this year, as this "Day of Ones" won't again happen for another 100 years, master of ceremonies Bill Shanklin said. At 11 a.m., all in attendance stood facing east in a moment of silence to honor veterans. Mayor Pete DiCianni was moved nearly to tears at the early part of his address, remembering his father, who passed away five years ago on Nov. 10. DiCianni said his father wasn't a veteran, but several of his family members were. "We look at the medics, the nurses and all these people that gave of their lives in …

Show Us Your Heroes for Veterans Day

Upload a photo or video of your or a loved-one to be featured on Veterans Day.

Did you, or do you have a loved one serving our country? If so, there are probably some cherished old photos and videos in your archives to remember their service. Dig through that old shoebox, find that file folder or scroll way down on your profile pictures—they’re bound to be somewhere. Patch wants to see your photos and videos, and hear your story from that time. Is there a photo showing you serving the veteran community?  We want to see that too. Simply upload your photos by clicking the “Submit Your Photos” button above the main image and we will feature it on Veterans Day. Make sure to add a caption telling us about the veteran (yourself, if it's you). Include their name, hometown, rank and branch of service, and the year the photo …

Freedom Is Not Free; Let's Honor Our Veterans

Elmhurst observes Veterans Day with memorial ceremony, school assemblies, a church program—and zoo admission is free.

Veterans Day was born of Armistice Day, which was established in 1938 to honor veterans of World War I. To expand the remembrance to include all veterans, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed in 1954 that Veterans Day would honor all Americans that served in the armed forces. Elmhurst American Legion has a rich tradition of honoring its veterans, and has been doing so at the Veterans Memorial at Wilder Park since 1993, the year the Memorial was dedicated. The ceremony this year will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. Elmhurst District 205 schools also will recognize Veterans Day. Churchville Middle School, 155 Victory Parkway, will hold a ceremony from 2 to 3:20 p.m. in the gym. Family members and friends who are serving or have …
