Day Care Proposal Prompts Review of Spring Road Traffic

Kensington School plan gets first OK from DPZ Committee.

Kensington School Founder Barbara Marlas said she has wanted to bring one of her schools to Elmhurst for decades. Now that her wish is closer to being granted, residents around Spring and St. Charles roads might get more traffic control on Spring Road. The Development, Planning and Zoning Committee on Monday gave preliminary approval to Kensington School's request to build a 15,000-square-foot day care and preschool on the east side of Spring Road, just south of St. Charles Road. The school, which has eight current locations, would house about 140 children, from infants to kindergarteners, and about 22 staff members each day. Zoning and Planning Commission members recommended approval of the school at their Jan. 10 meeting, but they also …

Sleighbells Ring on Spring

Freezing temperatures didn't keep residents away from a special Spring Road Day Saturday.

Just like a step back in time, a horse-drawn "sleigh" carried dozens of families around the Spring Road business district Saturday afternoon. All that was missing was the snow. It was bitter cold that day (we haven't seen anything yet) but there was plenty of hot chocolate and holiday cheer to keep everyone warm. Santa was at the gazebo, posing for pictures and making notes on what the younger set wants for Christmas. As long as the weather stays frosty, shoppers can enjoy lots of interesting ice sculptures in front of Spring Road businesses.

Santa Makes His First Appearance of the Season at Spring Road

Tree lighting kicks off the holidays in Elmhurst.

Santa cruised in among a throng of children at Spring Road and the Prairie Path Friday night, kicking off the holidays with the first tree lighting of the season. Santa was helped by dozens of children in flipping the switch; he then took his special seat in the gazebo and heard their wish lists. Cookies and hot chocolate provided a respite from the brisk winds. The event, sponsored by the Spring Road Business Association, also provided an opportunity for residents to donate to the Yorkfield Food Pantry. Residents who have photos of the Spring Road event are invited to upload them here.

Scrambling for Eggs: The Best 20 Seconds Ever!

Hundreds of kids stormed the park at Spring Road and the Prairie Path to gather as many candy-filled eggs as possible Saturday.

It really was the most fun you can have in 20 seconds. Hundreds of kids from Elmhurst and beyond waited somewhat patiently behind yellow tape for the official start of the Spring Road Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, at Spring Road and the Prairie Path. Areas of the park were cordoned off by age group, to keep the competition fair. Even though there were thousands of plastic eggs, each with candy inside, the kids made short work of collecting them all. They also got to spend some quality time with the Easter Bunny. After the hunt, Spring Road merchants, including Elmhurst Camera, Stemple's Cycles and Julianne's Bakery, offered more treats to kids who stopped by. Another egg hunt, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was held at Wilder Park …
