35 Facebook Pages Elmhurst Residents Should 'Like'

Here are some of the most Elmhurst-centric business pages on Facebook.

Small Business Saturday 2012 is a memory, but the idea behind the movement is to keep those dollars close to home as much as possible. Often deals that rival those of the big box stores can be found at local businesses, but they're not always as easy to discover. That's where Facebook comes in. Sometimes, local businesses post information on Facebook that you just can't find anywhere else—even on their company websites. Whether it's a last-minute special sale or an announcement about a visit from Santa, Facebook can be a source of information to help you make decisions on whether to visit a certain store or restaurant. Below, we've listed the Facebook pages of 35 Elmhurst businesses that are great places to shop this holiday season. In …

Shop Locally in Elmhurst on Small Business Saturday Nov. 24

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is two days after Thanksgiving this year, on Nov. 24. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses on which their communities thrive. American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Elmhurst. The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce launched a major shop-local marketing campaign, "Got It! ... in Elmhurst," last year to emphasize the importance of keeping shoppers in town. And, last year, 100 million people …

I spent over $350 at the Menard's in Glendale Heights and the only response from the village was a ticket for loading my vehicle where the employees told me to load. I was out of my vehicle for less than 60 seconds and never more than 3 feet from my vehicle and the police officer wrote me a ticket instead of letting me move my vehicle. In the past I have spent tens of thousands of business …   more ›

Courageous Baker Takes on Chicago Food Vendor Laws

Institute for Justice is representing Laura Pekarik of Cupcakes for Courage, and Greg Burke and Kristin Casper of Schnitzel King. They hope the city will build better food truck laws.

Cupcakes for Courage owner Laura Pekarik has joined the Institute for Justice and Schnitzel King owners Greg Burke and Kristin Casper in filing a lawsuit against the city of Chicago. In addition to her store, Courageous Bakery, at 108 W. Park St. in Elmhurst, Pekarik loads up her big green van every day with cupcakes and delivers them all over the city of Chicago. The proceeds are donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Schnitzel King, likewise, serves up Eastern European foods from its schnitzel cart. The problem is, Chicago law prevents any food truck from parking within 200 feet of any brick-and-mortar establishments that sells food—even convenience stores. (See accompanying video.) That Chicago law passed in July, and the fines …

I hope they prevail as well, great to see them taking a stance. I think a lot of smaller suburban restaurants could crack into the downtown market with food trucks. Think of a Zenwich, Nu Crepes, Chow, and more offering what Elmhurst loves to the entire city of Chicago!   more ›

Come meet Nora Schweihs of "Mob Wives" this Saturday.

Nora Schweihs, the tough-talking mob daughter from the hit VH1 series, "Mob Wives Chicago," is headed to Elmhurst. Well, on the show she's tough-talking, but on the phone Tuesday, she was quite amicable. And, she's quite dedicated to the cause of breast cancer. That's why she is making an appearance at a fund-raiser at Flight 112 Wine House this Saturday, Nov. 17. "You just realize how bad cancer is, whether it's breast cancer or any kind of cancer. It's very, very trying," Schweihs said. "Both of my parents had cancer." This will be her fifth event for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Schweihs is using her celebrity status to make a difference, now that "Mob Wives Chicago" has finished its run. The show is a raw look at the lives of five …

How Early is Too Early for Christmas Shopping?

It used to be Black Friday was for the earliest of early shoppers. Not anymore. Look around. The stores are ready now.

Look around the Chicago area and you'll see all the signs: The early birds no longer wait until Black Friday to do their Christmas shopping. This year, Black Friday is on Nov. 23, but big retailers and mail-order companies are starting well in advance. Amazon, for example, is beginning its Black Friday on Nov. 14. Crazy or crazy smart? Just how early is too early to shop for Christmas 2012 gifts? Take our poll.

Cupcakes for Courage New Elmhurst Store is All About Cupcakes—and so Much More

When asked how many hours a week she works, Laura Pekarik answered, "Who's counting"?

Never let it be said that a cupcake is just a cupcake. A cupcake can help fund a cause, add to a wedding celebration or simply cheer someone up. Cupcakes get Laura Pekarik out of bed in the morning—3:30 in the morning, in fact—every weekday. She gets up plenty early on weekends, too. The only thing more impressive than Laura's cupcakes is her work ethic. While most 26-year-olds admirably are getting their feet wet in the corporate world, Laura, at 26, is running a company. In fact, she may be on the verge of a cupcake empire. Those who have tried the gooey, one-of-a-kind creations by Cupcakes for Courage say they are impossible to resist. But a lot of people in Elmhurst haven't had the chance to try them yet. That's because, while Laura …
