The Illinois Senate approved legislation Thursday that would allow same-sex marriage in Illinois, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Senate voted 34-21. The bill provides equal opportunity for the same federal marriage benefits to same-sex couples that are currently awarded to other couples. Here's how Elmhurst's state senators voted: The 24th District includes nearly all of Elmhurst, and the 23rd District includes only a small portion of Elmhurst's west side. See how each member of the Illinois Senate voted. The measure will now go to the Illinois House, where the fight to pass the bill is expected to be tougher, according to the Trib. Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the bill if it makes it to his desk. Dillard had this to say …

Senate Republican leader Christine Radogno cited the Hinsdale senator's "unique perspective and institutional knowledge" in making her appointment.
State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) will serve as the assistant Senate Republican leader during the new session of the Illinois General Assembly, according to a release from Dillard's office. The 24th District senator, who said after his November re-election that he's mulling a second run for governor in 2014, was asked to be part of Republican leadership by Senate Republican leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), who cited Dillard's years as chief of staff to Gov. Jim Edgar and director of legislative affairs for Gov. James Thompson. “These experiences provide him with the unique perspective and institutional knowledge that will be invaluable to our caucus in the coming years,” Radogno said. “I know Kirk’s ability to work with our …

The Republican incumbent will now travel the state to seek advice on a possible run for governor in 2014.
State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) will serve another term in the Illinois Senate after a convincing win in Tuesday's General Election over Democratic candidate A. Ghani of Oak Brook in the race for Illinois' 24th State Senate District. Dillard won by getting 64,920 of 99,080 DuPage votes Tuesday from the 24th, which spans across the westerns suburbs and includes, among other towns, Clarendon Hills, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Western Springs, Westmont and Wheaton. Dillard also had 2,429 of 3,209 Cook County votes, with all Cook precincts reporting. The Republican senator has represented the 24th since he was first elected in 1994. "I thank the voters for returning me to Springfield, where I’ll work harder …

While November's elections are important, GOP leaders gathered at Republican National Convention say they're focused on strengthening the party for the long term.
TAMPA, FL -- With President Barack Obama carrying Illinois by 25 percentage points in 2008 and with a new poll showing him leading Mitt Romney by about the same margin, one might think there's not much joy among delegates and party leaders gathered here for the Republican National Convention this week. And while even the reddest of the Republicans acknowledges that GOP presidential candidate Romney has little chance of carrying Illinois, those in Tampa stress that they're focused on building the party for 2014 and beyond. "The presidential race will be an uphill climb for us," said state party Chairman Pat Brady, adding that Republicans are concentrating their efforts more on congressional and state legislative races this fall. "In 2014, …

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-24th, Hinsdale) is pondering another run for governor, according to a Daily Herald story published Aug. 17. Dillard says his first priority is to get re-elected to his 24th Senate District seat in November—he's going up against Democrat A. Ghani—but at a recent Springfield event, the Herald quoted the senator as saying he's having talks "to assess what 2014 looks like." The Hinsdale native, who has represented the 24th since 1993, cited his experience as former Gov. Jim Edgar's chief of staff as something that makes him a good gubernatorial candidate, as well as his personal background. “I think the right template for the election of a Republican governor is a suburbanite with very strong downstate roots,” …

The district includes all or part of Clarendon Hills, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Oak Brook, Western Springs, and Wheaton.
Updated at 11:05 p.m. State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) grabbed more than 60 percent of the vote and beat Rep. Chris Nybo (R-Lombard) for the Republican nomination in Illinois' 24th Senate District in Tuesday's General Primary. The incumbent has served the 24th District since 1993. "I take this as a nice referendum on my leadership style," Dillard said over the phone after the win became official. "It shows that people understand results and want state legislators to work in collaboration without ever giving up their principles." With 100 percent of precincts reporting in both DuPage and Cook counties, Dillard had 19,145 total votes (62 percent) to Nybo's 11,928 (32 percent). Nybo, who has represented the state's 41st House District …

Dillard's focus has included tort reform, repealing the state income tax increase, bringing Navistar back to DuPage and other pro-business initiatives.

The Illinois General Assembly has passed higher corporate and personal income taxes. This affects me and every business person, small or large, and every other taxpayer in the state. Overburdening taxes and regulation is stifling the business community and stopping our ability to hire. It’s all about jobs, jobs, and more jobs, and we need to repeal this oppressive tax increase. Senator Kirk Dillard has a strong pro-business record and has sponsored several pieces of legislation to put Illinois to work again. Dillard is also fighting for the repeal of the Quinn/Madigan/Cullerton tax increase. When I heard I had been redistricted into Sen. Dillard’s new 24th District, I was extremely encouraged. Sen. Dillard has been repeatedly named, "…

U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) has endorsed State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) in his 24th Senate District Republican primary race against State Rep. Chris Nybo (R-Lombard). Biggert announced her endorsement in a release sent out Monday morning, citing the incumbent's "leadership in budget matters" as her reasoning. "I can say from first-hand experience that Kirk’s style of government is, 'If you can't afford it, you can't spend it,'" Biggert said in the release. "I like that." Biggert, who is in the midst of her own Republican primary race in Illinois' 11th Congressional District, lives in Hinsdale and is the chairperson of the Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Financial …

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-24th, Westmont) has filed nominating petitions to be included on the ballot for the March 20 primary election. Senate candidates were required to file at least 1,000 signatures from qualified voters; Dillard filed 3,000 signatures. “I am pleased by the overwhelming support I received from over 100 volunteer supporters who helped me gather petition signatures, and I am further humbled and pleased that I was able to obtain many more than enough signatures to submit the maximum 3,000,” Dillard said. “The outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the people we talked with while gathering signatures was heartening.” An analysis of the petitions shows every community within Senate District 24 provided signatures. “…

Thank you for your intelligence and logic. I am so tired of people inserting religion into government. Marriage does not "belong" to religion. In fact, different religions have treated marriage differently for thousands of years. But people of any given religion think that THEIR way is the only right way, and think they have a particular claim on what marriage is and is not. If the government …   more ›
