To raise awareness of the enriching activities at York High School and help mitigate the cost of curricular and extracurricular opportunities, York Student Enrichment Team will hold a community “fun”-raiser showcasing student work from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Wilder Mansion, 211 S. Elmhurst-based charity Children UP provides an artistic day focused on raising tuition for high school kids in Africa.
It’s mid-afternoon on a Saturday, and despite the shade in the back yard of John and Susan Nester’s Elmhurst home, the heat is positively wilting. But Betty Laliberte is smiling warmly as she greets visitors who wander back to the Children UP fund-raiser July 2. On a low table are dozens of birds cast from molds—the same molds used to make the birds that adorn the walls in the commons area of York High School. Each visitor looks over the birds, running their hands over the details in the wings, until they decide which one they want to paint. Proceeds from the sale of the birds goes to Children UP, a nonprofit organization started by retired York High School art teacher Charlie Laliberte after he visited Uganda in 2005. Lots of great treasures to be found at Elmhurst Choral Union's garage sale Saturday.
When Elmhurst Choral Union concludes its successful seasons each spring, the summers give members time to rest their voices for the new year.
This year, members are using the break to raise funds and their visibility in Elmhurst and surrounding suburbs with their first garage sale.
Customers can peruse a selection of housewares, jewelry, toys and collectibles from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at First United Methodist Church, 232 S. York Road. All proceeds go toward producing the union’s concerts.
