Arrests for Theft and Forgery Reported; Multiple Cases Remain Unsolved

Cash, gift cards, copper, bikes, phones and more have been stolen in Elmhurst recently. And, sometimes, thieves just help themselves to your bank account.

Esteban Dayton, 31, 2790 Rhodes Apt. 8, Northlake, was arrested and charged with driving without registration, driving without insurance, improper use of registration, possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of a license plate sticker after police pulled over his black Chrysler 300 at County Line and Grand at 1:12 a.m. May 3. Police said he had a registration sticker on his vehicle that did not match his car. He was released on bond. Joseph M. Cascella, 18, 656 Crockett, was arrested and charged with retail theft after he allegedly took underwear and a hooded sweatshirt worth $66 from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 5:54 p.m. May 2. Thieves Are Among Us, Even at Church; Lock Up Your Stuff, Elmhurst

Police report burglary, theft, forgery and fraud during the second half of April.

An apartment on the 100 block of Virginia was broken into between 3 p.m. April 22 and 11:30 a.m. April 23. Taken was an Xbox game, Kinect sensor and a video game worth a total of $530. Estimated damage to the door is $50. Cory Martin, 25, 575 Thornhill Drive, Carol Stream, was arrested and charged with retail theft after he allegedly took a bottle of cologne worth $37 from Kmart, 265 S. Route 83, at 8 p.m. April 16. He was released on bond. Derrick Orr, 25, 1008 N. Mason Ave., Chicago, was arrested and charged with retail theft and resisting a peace officer at Dominick's, 215 S. Route 83, at 2:52 p.m. April 18. Contractor Skips Out with $3,000 for Job Never Done, Ex Skips Out With $2,275 Left Under the Nightstand

Landscaping trailer cleared out, counterfeit bills find their way to Elmhurst stores and other tales of thievery.

A resident of the 400 block of Atwater Avenue paid a down-payment of $3,000 in cash to a suspect allegedly employed by 4 Seasons Painting and Remodeling to have her kitchen remodeled. The contract, which was for $5,500, was signed last May but no work was ever performed on her kitchen. Numerous attempts to contact the suspect by phone and email have been unsuccessful, police said. A resident of the 200 block of North West Avenue believes her ex-boyfriend stole $2,275 she had in an envelope under her nightstand between March 4 and 6. She asked him to leave on March 5, dropped him off at the train station on March 6 and does not know where he is. The report was filed on March 9. Valentine's Day Arrests; Can You Feel the Love?

Arrests for cannabis, shooting out windows, theft and more were recorded on Valentine's Day, Thursday.

Fortunately, there were no massacres on Valentine's Day this year, but Elmhurst police were kept busy nonetheless. Here is a listing of arrests made on Thursday, Feb. 14. Veronica Guma, 22, 2413 George St., Franklin Park, was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia after police pulled over her tan Hyundai Sonata for improper lane use at Schiller and Willow at 2:38 a.m. Feb. 14. She was released on bond. Maxtin Cambra-Munoz, 19, 277 Fair, Elmhurst, and Jackson Lucero, 20, 416 S. Thief Makes Off With $7,000 Doughnut Box, and It Doesn't Cost $4,125 to Win the Mega Millions

Elmhurst police report fraud, retail theft, identity theft and—more theft.

Fraud A resident of the 300 block of East North Avenue told police he got a call from someone stating he won the Mega Millions $2.5 million sweepstakes. The caller told the victim to wire $125 to pay for the processing fee. The victim wired the money, then was contacted again by the caller stating he needed to wire another $4,000. After a number of phone calls between April 13 and 28, the victim became suspicious and notified police. Retail Theft Arrests A 16-year-old girl was arrested and charged with retail theft after she took $90 worth of cosmetics from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83 and left the store without paying at 6:33 p.m. April 25. Her aunt was in the store with her and was unaware of the situation. The girl was released on bond. …

Cigarette Causes Deck Fire on South Spring Road

A fire broke out on the wooden deck of a second-floor apartment on the 500 block of South Spring Road at 11:15 a.m. Oct. 19. The resident said he had been smoking a Camel cigarette and extinguished it outside the back door of his apartment into a partially wet cardboard box. He said he thought it had been fully extinguished, but a short time later, a portion of the deck was burning. Theft Someone took a black leather wallet containing a drivers license, bus pass, insurance card and debit card from the lobby of an apartment complex on the 200 block of South West Avenue at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 13. Jewelry, a car, cash, grill, power tools, electronics and more stolen in Elmhurst.

Burglary Someone broke into a home on the 200 block of West Butterfield Road between 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. June 3. The burglar entered the home through an unlocked service door in the attached garage and stole about $500 in jewelry. Fraud Someone fraudulently used personal information to purchase a 2007 BMW from Elmhurst BMW, 466 W. Lake St., last October. The vehicle was shipped to California, but no payments have been made on the car. The dealership reported the fraud to police on June 7. Theft Arrest Barbara Lawson, 41, 566 S. Sunnyside, Elmhurst, was arrested and charged with retail theft after an incident at Enzee Boutique, 140 N. York Road, at 3:47 p.m. June 7. Elmhurst Police Report Burglary, Theft

Woman with orange hair attempts to steal $5,500, and counterfeit $20 turns up at Portillo's.

Residential Burglary Police discovered at 12:32 p.m. April 27 that someone had broken into a home on the 600 block of West Crockett. The rear sliding glass door had been pried open, and a total of $3,720 in items were taken. Someone reportedly attempted to break into a home on St. Regis Court at 1:19 a.m. April 28. The resident told police that she was awakened by the sound of her wind chimes, which hang on the door knob, hitting against the door. She went downstairs to check the front door and noticed the door knob was loose and their was a cut in the screen door. Police didn’t find any footprints or fingerprints. Damage is estimated at $50. 'Tis the Season for Fraud and Identity Theft

Elmhurst police hear reports from residents.

A resident of the first block of First Street reported at 11:47 p.m. Nov. 29 that he received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service stating he owed $7,000 in back taxes from 1999-2000. He told police someone must have stolen his Social Security number to claim wages because he was only 10 years old at the time. A resident of the 500 block of Fay Street reported at 10 a.m. Nov. 28 that he was contacted by his Discover Card fraud department regarding four unauthorized charges to his credit card. A resident of the first block of Elm Creek Lane reported at 10:47 p.m. Nov. 28 that someone used his information to purchase $2,817.44 worth of merchandise on his Carson's credit.
