'Mob Daughter' Puts Father's Notoriety Behind Her; New Life Includes Fund-raising at Flight 112

Come meet Nora Schweihs of "Mob Wives" this Saturday.

Nora Schweihs, the tough-talking mob daughter from the hit VH1 series, "Mob Wives Chicago," is headed to Elmhurst. Well, on the show she's tough-talking, but on the phone Tuesday, she was quite amicable. And, she's quite dedicated to the cause of breast cancer. That's why she is making an appearance at a fund-raiser at Flight 112 Wine House this Saturday, Nov. 17. "You just realize how bad cancer is, whether it's breast cancer or any kind of cancer. It's very, very trying," Schweihs said. "Both of my parents had cancer." This will be her fifth event for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Schweihs is using her celebrity status to make a difference, now that "Mob Wives Chicago" has finished its run. The show is a raw look at the lives of five …

Elmhurst Realtors Rock'n for the Relay

Prudential Prairie Path's fund-raiser bash will include live music, wine and lots of cool raffle prizes—all hosted on Flight 112's new patio and all for a great cause.

We all have been touched by cancer. That's why the Elmhurst community—and communities all around us—come together to help raise money to find a cure at Relay for Life. This year's Relay is Friday, June 8, at Berens Park. One local team that has been participating for years is the Prudential Prairie Path Realtors Rock'n for a Cure. Prudential Realtor Diane Howarth says they started their team in 2004. "It's such a great cause," Howarth said. "Unfortunately, the very same day we started the effort, my sister Laura was diagnosed." The team usually raises an average of $7,000 each year, and has even hit the $10,000 mark. The whole office either participates in the relay or helps with fundraising for it. The Prudential team, which has been …

Flight 112 Wine House Caught Doing Something Cool

Raise your glass to Flight 112, which grabbed the attention of Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition.

If you didn’t do your homework beforehand, you could walk into Flight 112 thinking it is a run-of-the-mill wine bar. But this organic wine bar is more than what meets the eye … or palate. Seventy percent of the wine served at Flight 112 Wine House falls under the categories of sustainable, organic or biodynamic. “Taste and quality matter most,” says owner Visal Kheam. “No one wants to drink a ‘green’ wine if it doesn’t taste good.” Organic wine makes a great story, Kheam says. "It makes my work more difficult, trying to filter out only organic wine, but that makes it all the more interesting. Over time, I’ve come to realize that organic wines are earthier, with less fruits on the palate. They go better with food.” As a practice, Flight 112…

Unique Wine Experience at Flight 112

Wine house owner Frank Sibr talks about his organic wines and his strong customer loyalty.

Flight 112, an organic wine house in downtown Elmhurst, is part of the Mecca Building, which also is home to Effigy Salon, Glitch Art Gallery and Park Avenue Wellness.  Offering more than 50 wines from around the world, Flight 112 also sells 50 microbrew beers from national and international breweries.  Wine prices range from $16 to $70 per bottle, but most of the menu is under $40.  Flight 112 carefully chooses the food served to compliment the wines, and the menu changes with the seasons.  The shop works hard to create a casual bar atmosphere where the focus is luxury wine.  Patch caught up with Flight 112 owner Frank Sibr to talk about the inspiration for the wine house.   Elmhurst Patch:  When did Flight 112 open and what was your …

Graffiti Artists Bring Work to Glitch Gallery

These walls will be talking through Oct. 30.

Elmhurst's Glitch Gallery, 110 W. Park Ave., will showcase the work of eight Chicago area artists in, "If These Walls Could Talk: An Introduction and Evolution to Graffiti Art." The show will open with a 6 p.m. reception Sept. 18 and will run through Oct. 30.  "Graffiti art started on train cars and walls," said curator Roz Long. "It evolved into different letters, styles, symbols and script. A lot of it is amazing. You don't even think of it as graffiti." Artist Alex Espinosa started as a graffiti artist when he was 12 years old and has been mostly self-taught. "I was living in Miami for a while and I wanted to see what was going on in other areas," Espinosa said. "I wanted to take myself out of the bubble. When you spend so much time in …
