'Sights You Don't Want to See': Strat Matsas Shares His Chilling Experience at Boston Marathon

Matsas will forever be grateful that he made a casual decision to find a better vantage point.

For 40 minutes, Strat Matsas of Elmhurst sat on the steps of a building near the flags at the end of the Boston Marathon route, waiting for his wife, Melissa, to cross the finish line. He ate his lunch, he took a little video, he stood up at the fence line for a couple of minutes. And then he decided he didn't like the view. "I was there for 40 minutes waiting. I said, you know what, I'm going to walk up another 100 feet. And I stood underneath the Greek flag—because I'm Greek—for a better view of Missy," he said. He could move around easily like that because he was by himself. They had decided not to bring their kids along on this trip to Boston. Elmhurst Resident to Host Book Signing at Barnes and Noble

A portion of proceeds on Dec. 10 will go to the York Music Parents Association.

Elmhurst resident Emily Demuth Ishida will hold a book signing for her new novel, Plank Road Winter, at Barnes and Noble at Oakbrook Center Mall from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 10.  Ishida is a member of the York Music Parents Association, and her children, David, Hans-Martin and Louisa, all have been very involved in the York band program. The book signing coincides with the York Music Parents Association Book Fair, which is on the same day at Barnes & Noble. The book store will donate a portion of its proceeds to YMPA. Customers just need to mention York music, and their purchases will be included in the Barnes and Noble donation. Published by Crickhollow Books in October, Ishida co-authored the historical novel with her sister Hilda Demuth. …

Elmhurst Resident Indicted in Medicare Kickback Scheme

Home healthcare agency owner Junjee Arroyo of Elmhurst faces a total of 17 counts: one for conspiracy and 16 for anti-kickback statute violations. Each carries a penalty of five years and $250,000.

Editor's note: The following information was released Monday, Aug. 13, by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois. An Elmhurst resident who is co-owner of a home healthcare agency was indicted on federal charges for allegedly participating in a conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks in exchange for referral of Medicare patients for home health services. Elmhurst resident Junjee L. Arroyo, 44, along with Goodwill Home Healthcare co-owner Marilyn Maravilla, 55, of Chicago, and three other defendants allegedly conspired to pay and receive about $400,000 in kickbcks to themselves, nurses, marketers and others. This enabled Goodwill, which is based in Lincolnwood, to bill Medicare about $5 million. Also indicted were …
