It Was a Slushy, Spectacular St. Pat's Day Celebration in Elmhurst

A little rain and a lot of leftover snow didn't dampen the spirits of revelers on Spring Road. Share your photos of Saturday's St. Patrick's Day Parade and festivities here.

They came from all over the Chicago area and started lining up along Spring Road at 7 a.m. They endured bouts of rain showers, muddy conditions and chilly breezes. It was a far cry, weather-wise, from last year's 70 degrees. But no amount of inclement weather could stop thousands of families from enjoying another great St. Patrick's Day Parade—the 17th, this year—in Elmhurst. This parade has everything: green dogs, marching bands, fire and police trucks, mascots, and the Trinity Irish Dancers, who could have had a whole parade of their own with their hundreds of curly cuties. The Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra pulled up the rear of the parade. It appears they didn't have much luck wooing Bill Murray to Elmhurst on Saturday, but they did have …

I agree Jim. I was in the parade and would have loved to hear more Irish music.   more ›

Get Your Green On: It's Almost Time for Elmhurst's 17th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade!

With more than 20,000 spectators and nearly 100 parade entries, there really is no other place to be than Elmhurst this Saturday. Did you know there's a free shuttle this year?

Spring Road will be spring green from Wilson to the Canadian National Railroad tracks this Saturday, March 9. With tens of thousands of revelers expected to flock to town, the Elmhurst parade is now ranked as the second-largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the Chicago area, according to parade organizers. The parade will feature floats, the York High School Marching Band, Medinah clowns and cars, Benny the Bull and Tommy Hawk, Chicago Highlanders, Irish dancers, the Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra and so much more. Just look at this parade lineup! Elmhurst Unit District 205 School Board will be the Grand Marshals for this year's parade. The parade steps off at McKinley and Spring at noon, but be sure to get there early to get a spot along the …

Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra Wants Bill Murray—Yes, That Bill Murray—to Lead the St. Pat's Parade

They're hoping to woo him with The World's Largest Drum, named Mary. Hey, it could happen!

The men of the Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra think big. Really big. You've seen these guys in the Elmhurst St. Patrick's Day Parade. They dress in native-suburban garb—shorts, dark socks, T-shirts and sunglasses—and play standards like "Yankee Doodle" on kazoos, bucket-drums, washboards, vuvuzelas, pot lids and cowbell. This year, they're introducing the Stumpf Fiddle. Their sheet music is written on rolls of toilet paper hung around their necks. EAO, formed in 2009, draws its inspiration from a character in the movie Stripes played by popular actor and all-around funny man Bill Murray. His character, John Winger, leads a rag-tag bunch of Army recruits in parade exercises only Murray could pull-off. Well this year, EAO members want Bill Murray…

You Need to Attend the 16th Annual St. Pat's Parade Saturday if for No Other Reason Than This

The EAO will be back in full regalia with a new addition this year: a vuvuzela player.

Back in February 2009, Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade Chairman Jim O’Connor mentioned to some friends at an Elmhurst couple’s wedding reception that the parade needed another unit to entertain adults and children, alike.  And thus, the Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra was born.  EAO founders envisioned the all-male kazoo and bucket-drum band dressed in native-suburban male garb (shorts, tall socks, sleeveless T-shirts and sunglasses). Over the next several weeks the EAO’s numbers grew to more than 25 members. They were an immediate hit! Playing such standards as “Yankee Doodle,” “The Colonel Bogey March” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” the EAO looks forward to entertaining parade goers for the fourth straight year beginning at noon …
