Top of the Blotter: Taxi Driver Snatches Purse, Group Grabs iPhone

Reports from the Elmhurst Police Department.

Police are looking for a cab driver who reportedly robbed a woman he picked up around 4 a.m. on Sunday. The woman and another person hailed the cab near Ontario and Franklin. After agreeing to a $60 fare for the ride, the driver turned the corner toward the area of Oaklawn and Gladys where he reportedly demanded more money, police said. The woman gave the driver $70 and exited the cab with the other person. As they began to walk away, the driver ran up behind the pair, grabbed the woman’s purse and fled the area, police reported. The purse contained a leather Coach wallet with cash, credit cards and an iPhone, as well as the woman’s identification. Police did not have information as to driver’s cab company, taxi number or license plate. …

North Ave., at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 4. Disordely Conduct Jose Valentino, 24, 1001 Marshall, Bensenville, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct/public intoxication at AT&T, 291 N. Donation Drives Will Help Kids Right Here in Elmhurst Through UCCA

Elmhurst Police Department is accepting new, unwrapped gifts through December, while Tree Town Nursery School collected food items.

Students at Tree Town Cooperative Nursery School in Elmhurst collected 107 food items to help needy families in Elmhurst this holiday season. The food was collected for United Community Concerns Association, which has provided more than $77,000 worth of food and food certificates to more than 320 families and 85 seniors in Elmhurst.   The UCCA is an all-volunteer organization. Its mission is to target Elmhurst District 205's most needy children and provide food, referrals and services to them in an effort to fight hunger. Elmhurst Police Department also is collecting for UCCA, but instead of food, it is collecting unwrapped Christmas gifts to be donated to needy children living within Elmhurst Unit District 205. Police Blotter: Drugs, Thefts and DUIs

Drug Offenses Police stopped a vehicle near York Road and North Avenue just after 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 28 when the drive admitted to possessing drugs, police said. Officers using a K-9 to search the vehicle discovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia and suspected hydrocodone pills. The pills were sent for testing, and the driver was released with no immediate charges. Theft Police were called to the area of Adele and Melrose around 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 29 on reports of several missing sewer grates. Police reported four locations where a portions of the grates were missing. The street department was notified. Police have no suspects. A woman reported she left her Michael Kors sunglasses on her desk at work on Sept. 27 and they were missing when …

New Police Chief Will Come From Countryside

Michael Ruth Will Start Nov. 5

Countryside Police Chief Michael Ruth has been named the new head of the Elmhurst Police Department. Ruth, who begins in Elmhurst on Nov. 5, has been in Countryside for just over two years. Before that, he was with the Skokie Police Department for 29 years. He holds a Master of Science in Criminal and Social Justice from Lewis University and a Bachelor of Arts from Governors State University. According to a city of Elmhurst press release, in Countryside, Ruth improved communications within the department and between the residents and police officers. Police Blotter: Traffic Offenses and Suspicious Activity

Traffic Offenses Police stopped a Ford Escape for driving too slow in the 600 block of West Lake Street around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. During the stop, police learned the driver, Ana Bello, 23, of Chicago, did not have a license or insurance. She was charged with driving without a license, no insurance, and violating the minimum speed requirement. She was released, but the vehicle was towed. Juan Gonzalez, 20, of Melrose Park, was charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near North Avenue and Route 83 just before midnight on Sept. 29. Gonzalez was also cited for no insurance and driving with a loud exhaust system. He was released after posting a cash bond. Rudy Castillo, 19, of Villa Park, was arrested on a …

Top of the Blotter: Wrestlers in Bar Fight, Man Down on York and More

Battery Police were called to Pint’s, 112 S. York, around midnight on Sept. 29 on a report of several of a fight involving professional wrestlers. Officers arrived to learn one wrestler had gone to the hospital with a cut lip that required seven stitches. The wrestler did not remember who punched him. According to police, the fight started when one person tried to push his way past two of the wrestlers and shoved one of them, police said. No arrests were made, but police expected to follow up interviews with a potential suspect. Police did not identify anyone involved in the altercation. Elmhurst Police Officer Honored by MADD

Officer Matthew McCollum led the department in DUI arrests in 2011.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Sept. 22 recognized Officer Matthew McCollum of the Elmhurst Police Department for his efforts in reducing alcohol abuse in Elmhurst. Each year, MADD recognizes individuals in Illinois who make exemplary efforts to eliminate drunk driving, provide support for victims of DUI and help prevent underage drinking. Elmhurst Police Department has a long history of aggressive DUI enforcement. In 2011, the Elmhurst Police Department made 367 DUI arrests which was the sixth highest in the state. McCollum was the leading officer in Elmhurst with 73 DUI arrests. He is also a police academy instructor where he trains police recruits in the administration of DUI field sobriety tests. Police Blotter: Multiple Licenses and Other Traffic Trouble

Traffic Choi Yong, 69, of Glenview was charged with aggravated driving with a suspended license after a traffic stop near Hahn and Third around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 1. Police initially stopped the vehicle because a front passenger, Paul Yoo, 59, of Streamwood, was observed without a seat belt. Yoo was cited for the seat belt violation and released. Yong reportedly gave the officer two fake driver’s licenses before providing his correct license, which was found to be suspended. Yong was taken to DuPage County Jail. Daniel Peralta, 34, of Lombard, was charged with driving with a suspended license and improper passing after a traffic stop just after 7 a.m. on July 30 in the 600 block of West North Avenue. A couple bank robberies, yes, but in reality, compared to other towns the size of Elmhurst, crime is low, especially violent crime. Police Blotter: Construction Violation and Missing Sewer Grates

Construction Violation Police were called to the 100 block of Arthur just after 6 a.m. on Aug. 1 on a report of a violation of construction hours. Police arrived to find five employees working on a roof. A citation was issued and the crew was told to stop working until 7 a.m. Theft Police responded to a report on July 31 of a roadway obstruction in the 400 block of Ida to find several metal grates were missing along the road. Police also noticed missing grates on Emery Lane and on North Evergreen. Each grate was valued at $120. On Aug. 1, around 3:30 p.m., police were called to the 700 block of South Mitchell after another sewer grate was determined to be missing.
