Learn the Ins and Outs of Elmhurst Police Work by Attending the Citizen Police Academy

Participants will learn what is involved with emergency response, DUI arrests, crime scene analysis, arrest laws, interrogations and much more—and it's free.

Elmhurst citizens who would like to gain a deeper knowledge about what Elmhurst police officers do on a day-to-day basis are encouraged to attend the spring session of the Citizen Police Academy, scheduled to begin in March. The academy is free of charge and gives citizens a working knowledge of law enforcement and the Elmhurst Police Department. Each weekly session will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning March 13 and ending June 5 with a graduation banquet. Each week, participants will get an in-depth view of how a particular division of the department functions, and some of the topics will allow hands-on participation. I hope your police department will not do what other departments around the nation have tended to do; that is, to present police work as an exercise of "cops and robbers" and not as the highly-relational job which it is. Driving with a Revoked License Melissa Temen, 34, 117 N. Lincoln, Addison, was arrested and charged with driving with a revoked license after police pulled over her red Ford Explorer at Route 83 and St. Charles at 8:36 p.m. Dec. 14. She was released on bond. Driving With a Suspended License Deseray Bobo, 25, 2485 W. Congress, Chicago, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance after police pulled over her black Pontiac Grand Prix for failure to signal at 400 W. Police Blotter: Damaged Vehicles, Light Poles and Christmas Decorations

Property Damage Someone keyed a Jeep Liberty parked at 1200 S. York St. around noon on Dec. 12. Security later revealed the offender caught on camera. The complainant agreed to sign a complaint and was told to bring the vehicle to the police station for photos. Someone cut the Christmas lights at a home on the 400 block of Park Manor between 4 and 11 p.m. Dec. 12. Damage is estimated at $120. Someone threw orange paint on a vehicle parked on the 100 block of East Cayuge between 4:14 p.m. Dec. 17 and 6:20 a.m. Dec. 18. Damage is estimated at $50. A BB gun reportedly was shot at a house and garage on the 600 block of North Indiana between Nov. 30 and Dec. 19. The resident noticed several BB-type holes on her house and garage that appeared to…

Top of the Blotter: Hit-and-Run Suspects and Account Thefts

Battery Police responded to the 100 block of North York around 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 26 on a report of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, officers learned a woman had observed her daughter being yelled at by a person not identified by police. When the woman intervened, the person punched her in the face, as did a second person. Police did not make any arrests because of conflicting stories about the incident and because no one wanted to sign criminal complaints, according to a police report. Hit and Run Police apprehended three suspects fleeing from a hit-and-run crash near North Avenue and West Street just before 10 a.m. on Dec. 23. Police Blotter: Warrants and Retail Theft Arrests

Retail Theft Arrests Judith R. Brandow, 67, 463 S. Harvard Ave., Villa Park, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she allegedly was seen removing items from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, without paying for them at 6:36 p.m. Dec. 18. She was released on I-bond. Brittany Klein, 22, 610 Lalonde, Lombard, was arrested and charged with retail theft after taking $31 worth of clothing from Kmart, 265 S. Route 83, and attempting to leave the store without paying. She was released on I-bond. Deborah Decker, 41, 40 Prairie Drive, Addison, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she allegedly stole jewelry and clothing worth $187.41 from Kohl's, 303 S. Top of the Blotter: Ripped Off Rental Car and Suspicious Cookie Delivery

Suspicious Person Police got a call for a suspicious person in the area of Fair and South streets at 3:48 a.m. Dec. 21. When leaving the area, police saw two individuals running through back yards. A perimeter was set up, but the suspects were not found. Police were called to the 400 block of Huntington around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 on a report of a man who tried to open two doors to a house while a female resident was inside. She locked herself in an upstairs bathroom and called police. Two bags of Christmas cookies were found near the front door and taken into evidence. Police also spoke to neighbors. Police Warn of 'Bill' Scam in Elmhurst

Residents, businesses have received "Telecom Maintenance Agreement" warranty.

Police are investigating a "bill" sent to Elmhurst residents and businesses from a California company requesting $425 for a "Telecom Maintenence Agreement" The bill, according to police, is actually a warranty, and no one is obligated to make the payment to the company - US Telecom. Police said the Better Business Bureau has issued several warnings about this type of scheme, as noted on one profile for US Telecom that indicated 539 complaints about their practice of sending out such invoices for a one-year maintenance contract. US Telecom's website indicates it has provided remanufactured telecommunications equipment and maintenance services since 1989. It also details its warranty plans and how to be removed from the company's mailing …

Police Blotter: DUI and Other Traffic Arrests

DUI Hector Calderon, 45, of Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding after a traffic stop around 4:50 p.m. on Dec. 7 near Route 83 and Interstate 290, police said. Calderon was later released on bond. Megan Murphy, 24, of Roselle, was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane use and driving with a suspended driver’s license after a traffic stop near York and Palmer just before 4 a.m. on Dec. 9. Daphne Stanton, 32, of Willowbrook, was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane usage, driving the wrong way, no insurance and illegal transportation of alcohol after a traffic stop at West and Addison just after 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 9, police said. Police Blotter: Jewelry Theft and Unauthorized ATM Action

THEFT On Dec. 10, a resident reported someone made several unauthorized ATM withdrawals totaling $1,900 at locations outside of Elmhurst. The resident still had the ATM card, but believed the withdrawals were made using his account number. Joanne Buttacavoli, 60, of Bensenville, was charged with retail theft after security personnel at Kohl’s said she left the store around 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 10 without paying for jewelry valued at nearly $200. Buttacavoli was released on an I-Bond. A student at Elmhurst College reported his wallet was taken from a table at the Frick Center after he forgot it around 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 9. Theft A man reported to police that someone took $1,245 from his bank account in a fraudulent transaction which occurred in London, police said. A man in his late teens is suspected of taking a $30 pair of jeans without paying from the Kohl’s store on Route 83 just before 2 p.m. on Dec. 7, police said. The suspect could not be located. He was seen wearing a black jacket and black “beanie” style hat.
