UPDATE: Idea of Adjusting to a New School Start Time Next Year Has Some Parents on Edge

The proposal, in the early stages of discussion, would save $350,000 a year, but elementary school start time would be nearly 9 a.m. "We just have to look at everything," Superintendent Pruneau says.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m.: District 205 School Board President Jim Collins had this to say Tuesday morning with regard to the three-tier bus proposal: "The board has asked Dave Pruneau and his administration to explore every idea they can think of to reduce the School District's costs without impacting the quality of education we deliver to our students. They are doing the job we asked them to do. We understand that a three tiered bus system will impact start times in our schools. We understand and are empathetic the logistical complexities and expense of child care and the impact that our decisions may have on the quality of life of our students and potentially on the careers of our parents. I can assure you and the members of our…

District 205 School Board Gives a Reluctant Nod to $1.2 Million in Cuts

After April 10, teachers getting laid off will know who they are.

A 90 minute discussion by Elmhurst District 205 School Board members Tuesday night did not lead to any magic bullet or previously unrevealed secret that would fix the district's budget without painful cuts. On the contrary, it set those cuts in motion. It's the third consecutive year the district has had to trim the budget. Last year, the district used the Elmhurst Educational Program Review Technique, or EEPRT, to cut $3 million out of its budget. EEPRT data collected in 2011 was one of the criteria board members used this year when evaluating areas to cut. While the amount to be cut for 2012-13 is less than last year, about $1.2 million, the cuts are hitting some vital areas. "If there was anything frivolous, it was cut a long time ago…

That number 7,576 is small in comparison to 130000 IEA members in Illinois. Many of those top salaries are probably administrators that finished there careers in the classroom. That 7500 number is under 6% of the educators in Illinois make over 6 figures. How many teachers are in Kentucky? Wisconsin? Iowa? Missouri? What percentage make above 6 figures. Again 6% is not too many. Check south of …   more ›

District 205 Board Set to Approve Phone Upgrade, Learning Labs, Nursing Contract Amendment, York's NCLB Improvement Plan and More

Tax levy is scheduled for adoption, too.

Elmhurst Unit District 205 School Board will hold its monthly business meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the district's administration building, 162 S. York St. The open meeting will be preceded by an executive session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss employment of an employee and collective negotiations. Following the closed session, board members will call to order a public hearing for the adoption of the 2011 tax levy. The board agreed tentatively last month that it would ask for a levy increase of 4.7 percent, based on the assumption that the district will receive about $1.4 million in property taxes from the new Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The hospital represents $38 million in new growth, according to the township assessor. School …

Nancy, I just remembered. When this bill first came up years ago, I spoke to our BOE about opposing the act. That should be in the public section comments of the BOE minutes.   more ›
