Elmhurst American Legion, Villa Park VFW Welcome Great Lakes Recruits for Thanksgiving

With the Villa Park VFW still being rehabbed after a fire last May, Elmhurst American Legion opened its doors to keep tradition alive.

Elmhurst American Legion and the Villa Park VFW welcomed 183 recruits from Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago for Thanksgiving Day. Charter buses picked them up at the base Thanksgiving morning and brought them, with a police escort, to the American Legion Post at 310 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. The recruits, along with about 100 volunteers, spent the entire day together in Elmhurst. They had breakfast and dinner, and were able to call their family and friends back home, watch football and generally relax and enjoy the day. The annual event is traditionally held at Villa Park VFW Post 2801, but a major fire in May left that building uninhabitable. Construction is nearing completion, and the building is expected to be open again …

Elmhurst American Legion Lays Torn and Tattered Flags to Rest Saturday

The formal disposal ceremony is held annually in conjunction with Flag Day.

Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 held its annual flag disposal Saturday. The ceremony, which is held annually in conjunction with Flag Day, takes place in the Post parking lot. The ceremony is brief, but the flag disposal takes hours. Groups from all over the area collect hundreds of torn and tattered flags for the ceremony each year. Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the U.S. approved the design for the first national flag.

We Remember Their Service This Memorial Day

There is more to Memorial Day than picnics and vacations; just ask a veteran.

Many Americans honor the fallen on Memorial Day by visiting a cemetery, watching a parade or tuning into the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS. There also are those who look at the holiday as a three-day weekend filled with family activities. We wanted to talk to some veterans—about Memorial Day, their service to our country—so we visited Elmhurst American Legion T.H.B. Post 187.  David Riva of Elmhurst, 64, is a Vietnam veteran who served as a specialist 4th Class in the U.S. Army. He trained with the 9th Infantry Division in Kansas and was stationed in Vietnam from February 1967 to February 1968. He compared the Vietnam War to the current war in the Middle East. “They were both wars that were outside the realm of a declared war," Riva…

Battery Charges Filed After Altercation at American Legion

Charges include underage drinking and obstruction of a police officer.

Several people were arrested at the American Legion Hall, 310 W. Butterfield Road, at 12:37 a.m. April 3. Police responded for a fight in progress. They were told an employee cut his arm after being pushed by a 17-year-old boy during an altercation. When an officer tried to have the teen step outside, Roberto Hernandez, 42, 1714 Heatherstone Ave., Montgomery, reportedly stepped in front of the officer and pushed him. Fabian Ramos, 32, of the same address, refused to leave the scene. All subjects were taken into custody. The teen was charged with battery and consumption of alcohol by a minor. Hernandez was charged with battery and obstructing a police officer, and Ramos was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer. All…

Deb At one time the suburbs had a residency requirement just like Chicago. However, civil rights activists complained that this kept minorities from getting these jobs and after much pressure the suburbs opened up to include persons living outside of the community. However, when it comes to Chicago these same 'activists' don't want the same thing for Chicago. They hope by closing the door to …   more ›

Freedom Is Not Free; Let's Honor Our Veterans

Elmhurst observes Veterans Day with memorial ceremony, school assemblies, a church program—and zoo admission is free.

Veterans Day was born of Armistice Day, which was established in 1938 to honor veterans of World War I. To expand the remembrance to include all veterans, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed in 1954 that Veterans Day would honor all Americans that served in the armed forces. Elmhurst American Legion has a rich tradition of honoring its veterans, and has been doing so at the Veterans Memorial at Wilder Park since 1993, the year the Memorial was dedicated. The ceremony this year will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. Elmhurst District 205 schools also will recognize Veterans Day. Churchville Middle School, 155 Victory Parkway, will hold a ceremony from 2 to 3:20 p.m. in the gym. Family members and friends who are serving or have …
