The 4 of the 4th Run caps off Elmhurst's holiday events. Other festivals can be found nearby in Oak Brook, Lombard and Lisle.

Nothing says “summer” like the Fourth of July. This year, Elmhurst is participating in a four-day fest with our neighbors to the north, as well as the traditional 4-mile 4 on the 4th Run sponsored by Community Bank of Elmhurst. Elmhurst, as has become a tradition, is partnering with the Village of Bensenville to host Libertyfest July 1-4 at Redmond Park, 735 E. Jefferson St. in Bensenville. The event will feature carnival rides and games, tons of food vendors, pony rides, magic shows, bands every night and two nights of fireworks. A free shuttle service will operate Saturday, July 2, through Monday, July 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. approximately every 30 minutes. Here’s the event schedule: Friday, July 1 Saturday, July 2 Sunday, July 3 Monday, …

Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation Names Blanche Hill Friend of the Children

Blanche and her husband started Superior Ambulance Co. back in 1959.

Elmhurst Children's Assistance Foundation will present Blanche Hill with the 2011 Friend of the Children Award at the 16th annual ECAF golf outing Aug. 1 at Riverside Golf Club. Blanche and her husband, David, started Superior Ambulance, a 24-hour operation, from a back room in their home in 1959. As the demand for emergency response grew and medical technology advanced, David and Blanche started Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service Inc.,  the first emergency ambulance service in DuPage County. Superior is now run by the Hill’s son, David, and continues to serve Elmhurst families and the greater Chicago area. The Hill family has had a long-time dedication to the children of Glenwood School for Boys and Girls, which nurtures and educates …

Calling All Elmhurst Students: It's Time for This Year's Public Art Display

ECAF and Elmhurst City Center are doing things a little different this year. Deadline for sponsorship is March 23.

Elmhurst City Centre and Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation have announced the Hometown Art with Heart 2011 public art display. This year’s display will feature children’s benches and a great new twist: The artwork will be painted by area schoolchildren. Since 2003, these two organizations have worked together to create an attractive outdoor art exhibit and raise money to make a difference in the lives of sick and disabled children right here in Elmhurst. This year, they are excited to encourage kids helping kids through a cooperative creative effort with area schools. Businesses, residents, parent organizations and other groups or individuals are invited to sponsor artwork created by the school of their choice on a first-come, …

Rolling the Dice for a Good Cause

It's all fun and games as hundreds turn out at the Diplomat West for ECAF.

The Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation hosted its second annual Casino Night Feb. 19 at Diplomat West in Elmhurst. The event had a Roaring '20s theme. A record 362 attendees turned out this year to roll the dice for a good cause. Donations are still being received, but are expected to approach last year’s total of nearly $20,000, according to ECAF Treasurer Michael Burroughs. "None of this could have been possible with out the community support and the numerous businesses that supported ECAF through donations and sponsorships," he said. ECAF's mission is to assist local Elmhurst children with serious medical or disabling conditions. ECAF also hosts Kool Kiddie Artwork, which is displayed in downtown Elmhurst every summer, as well as…

Auction Raises $3,800 for Elmhurst Children's Assistance Foundation

Dog houses and picnic tables find good homes.

Valerie Tauchen of Elmhurst was so excited when she won the bid on a Cool Kiddie Art piece auctioned off at Elmhurst's Spotlight Night Friday, she was practically in tears. It was a dog house painted to look like a greenhouse. "Oh, thank you!" she said, hugging her husband, Bill, after no one topped her $300 bid. "I can't believe it!" Her piece was one of eight—five dog houses and three picnic tables—that brought in a total of $3,800 for Elmhurst Children's Assistance Foundation Friday. A total of 26 pieces had been sponsored by local businesses and painted in different themes by Elmhurst artists. Most of them were pre-purchased. Steve Rhea of Elmhurst, ECAF vice president, said the money brought in was not as much as they had hoped, but "…
