Prosecutors call ‘wedding crasher’ a child predator; details come out on the first day of trial Wednesday.
Testimony in the trial of a Virginia man accused of exposing himself to a young girl in Elmhurst in 2010 began Wednesday, with prosecutors calling Priyang Parikh a “predator,” while his defense questioned the girl’s identification of their client. Parikh, 30, of Alexandria, Va., has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted predatory criminal sexual assault of a child in connection to an incident that occurred during a wedding ceremony at an Elmhurst banquet hall. In her opening statement to jurors, Assistant State’s Attorney Anne Therieau describe Parikh as a “wedding crasher” who didn’t know the couple getting married, yet still involved himself in the festivities to the point he appeared in photos and…

Elmhurst resident Paul F. Murphy was found guilty of 15 counts of aggravated possession of child pornography by a DuPage County judge Wednesday morning. Last year, Elmhurst Police began an investigation after Officer Steve Mandat discovered files containing child pornography being shared with an Elmhurst internet address. Mandat and other officers traced the internet address to 954 N. York St., a mixed-use business development that includes a car wash, laundromat and two small apartments, one in which Murphy lived. In February, Mandat and other officers obtained a warrant and searched the computers on the premises. In Murphy’s apartment, investigators discovered thumb-drives and two CD-Roms that contained hundreds of images and videos of …

New county chairman is confident his picks will serve the people well.
The Dan Cronin era of DuPage County government kicked off today with the appointment of a new state's attorney and new members to the DuPage County Water Commission. Cronin, who was elected DuPage County Board chairman in November, began his tenure with the board unanimously supporting his selections. Immediately following the confirmation of his appointment as state's attorney, Robert Berlin was sworn in as the top law enforcement official in DuPage. Berlin, who has worked as a prosecuting attorney since 1987, said he is looking forward to the challenge of leading the office he's served the past six years. "The top priorities of my office will be protecting the public and defending the rights of victims of crime," Berlin said. "The …

State Sen. Dan Cronin will be sworn in as DuPage County Board Chairman Dec. 6, and his first big decision will be to appoint a new state's attorney.
Dan Cronin, soon to be sworn in as DuPage County Board chairman, is not looking for a caretaker to serve the remainder of Joseph Birkett's term as state's attorney, said Julie Kelly, spokeswoman for Cronin. He's looking for someone to get the job done. Cronin, of Elmhurst, will be sworn in as DuPage chairman Dec. 6. On Dec. 14, he will lead his first board meeting, where the board may vote to approve Cronin's appointment of a new DuPage state's attorney. State law gives Cronin the right to name a replacement, with confirmation by the board. Birkett, who was appointed judge on the Second District Illinois Appellate Court, will be sworn in for that job on Dec. 13. The replacement would serve the remaining two years of Birkett's term, until…

Although the "get tough on crime" stance plays well to voters and the public's easily manipulated and fearful mindset, it also leads to an authoritarian governance and legal system. DuPage has had a long history of "guilty until proven innocent" . Although I truly detest crime, I never want to see an excessive burden placed on those who are innocent. The Texas model of criminal justice is not the…   more ›
