As Many As 8,000 Runners Will Descend on Elmhurst for the 29th Annual Turkey Trot

Beautiful weather in store.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with that comes one of the most popular events in the entire Chicago area: The Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot. More than 7,500 people flocked to Elmhurst last year for the 5-K (3.1 mile) run, and the number of participants increases every year. Event organizers say participants hail from all over the United States, as well as Canada and Europe. If you're thinking of staying home to save your energy for the big feast, rest assured. You'll be home before the turkey is out of the oven—even if you walk the route (which many do). The race begins, 9 a.m. Nov. 22 at the corner of York and South streets. (See attached route.) Sign Up for the Turkey Trot by Saturday and Save a Few Bucks

But don't run down the Prairie Path this year, or you'll be running alone.

You've heard about it. You've seen them run past your house on Thanksgiving morning and thought, "It's cold out. I'm going to rest up and conserve the energy I'll need later for digestion. Organizers of the 28th annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, the granddaddy of all Turkey Trots, are inviting you to get off the couch Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24, and help raise money to feed the hungry. You don't even have to run; you can walk, meander, jog or amble. And, you can get a cool shirt or other Trot Wear. For the first time, the Turkey Trot will take a new route through Elmhurst to accommodate more participants and provide runners and walkers a …

This Year's Turkey Trot Will Take Runners on a New Path

Race route will wrap around Elmhurst College and pass by Wilder Park.

Anyone who has run in the annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot can attest to the run's immense popularity. The 5-k draws between 6,000 and 7,000 runners to Elmhurst on Thanksgiving Day each year. This year, six DuPage County charities will benefit from the event, and each charity is running its own promotional campaign. This led the Turkey Trot Committee to anticipate a greater turnout than in past years and a need to make some changes to accommodate the bigger crowd. "The Prairie Path has exceeded its capacity and posses several safety concerns," committee members said in a memo to the City Council. So on Monday, Elmhurst City Council members unanimously approved a new route for the Turkey Trot, which this year will be held on Nov. 24. The 28th…

Navigating among runners on the Prairie Path was becoming a little more difficult each year, so this will probably be safer. I just hope we don't lose the chance to jog past the people serving the little Bloody Marys in lieu of water.   more ›
