Another DUI enforcement campaign will begin today, Friday, March 8, and run through Sunday, March 17, to coincide with St. Patrick's Day festivities that will be held in Elmhurst and surrounding communities. Elmhurst Police Department receives a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation to put additional officers on the streets during the enforcement period. The goal is to reduce fatal and serious-injury crashes by enforcing seat belt laws and stopping impaired drivers. The stepped-up enforcement will take place all hours of the day, but police will be especially vigilant between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., which is the deadliest time on Illinois roads. The Elmhurst Police Department's “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown will continue through New Year's Day. The stepped-up enforcement, made possible by a federal grant, began Dec. 17 and concentrates mainly on the deadly nighttime hours, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Following are the arrests made between Dec. 21 and 25. Elmhurst police also report 26 traffic accidents in town over the weekend.
Aside from a period of rain on Thanksgiving Day, local weather conditions were relatively mild over the long holiday weekend. But that didn't prevent Elmhurst police from tending to at least 26 traffic accidents in town, two of which involved driving under the influence of alcohol. The weekend also concluded another enhanced DUI enforcement period for local police thanks to a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The Elmhurst Police Department is in the middle of an enforcement period designed to make the roads safer. The city received a year-long grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation so it can beef up patrols to find impaired drivers and drivers not wearing their seat belts. The current campaign began Aug. 17 and will continue through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. Additional officers will be out during the overnight hours, which are the most dangerous times on Illinois roadways. Elmhurst police reported a number of DUI arrests in the past week. Black Wednesday—also known as "blackout" Wednesday or Drunksgiving Eve, is arguably the biggest party weekend of the year according to multiple news sources, including the Chicago Sun-Times. Bar owners say Black Wednesday crowds often exceed those on New Year's Eve or St. Patrick's Day, according to the article. The reasons aren't hard to figure out: College kids are home for the Thanksgiving holiday, it's a long, four-day weekend for many, homes are fully stocked with liquor and bars are loaded with drink specials. The Elmhurst Police Department is continuing stepped-up enforcement of DUI and seat belt laws through Monday, July 4. This particular campaign began in mid-June, but campaigns are held at various times throughout the year and are made possible by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The goal is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. Extra officers will be out on patrol looking for impaired drivers and seat belt violations.
