District 205 Administrators: Cyber Bullying Law Will Give Them Some 'Teeth' to Address Growing Problem
Legislator calls new law a "baby step" in the right direction.
A new Illinois law that allows school boards to expel or suspend any student who makes a threat against school personnel or other students online is being called a "baby step" to stopping cyber bullying by one of the bill's co-sponsors. But it is a welcome step for Elmhurst District 205, which has been experiencing its own issues with online threats. Rep. Sandra Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn), said because of concern about infringement of First Amendment rights, the bill is a "little soft," but has enough teeth to provide school boards with direction on how to deal with students who make explicit threats online. That's great Jay but when my daughter had her life threatened at York and the kid was questioned, found with the weapon of intent and admitted to it...all he got was a slap on the wrist and when mommy and daddy shelled out the dough to put him in Spec Ed, where they won't necessarily get expelled,.he was back at school 3 months later. Admin neglected to inform our daughter and us of his return...…   more ›
