Milling is now qualified for Nationals in San Diego Dec. 8.

Helping lead the York High School Boys Cross Country Team to its 28th state championship was just the beginning for York senior Scott Milling. He kept on running, all the way to a ninth-place finish at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship Midwest Regionals Saturday, Nov. 24, in Kenosha, Wisc. Race conditions were good on the 5,000-meter course, but the temperature hovered in the mid-20s under cloudy skies. Milling's Top 10 finish earned him an invitation to the National Finals in San Diego. The top 10 boys and the top 10 girls in the seeded Midwest Regionals qualified to compete against runners from the Northeast, South and West Regional meets in the Foot Locker Nationals Dec. 8. Eighth-grade boys bring home the trophy, Grace Moriarty ties all-time SPL record.

Last weekend (Sept. 29), the team had many accomplishments at the Suburban Parochial League Cross Country Championships in Lombard. The league consists of 26 schools from the western suburbs, with runners in grades five through eight. The Cross-Town Crew, Visitation/IC, had a very successful 2012 season leading up to the championships. The annual pasta party celebration to end the regular season included all 49 team members, their families, head coach Mary Clare Sullivan and assistants Quentin Sullivan and Mark Montgomery. York Graduate Selected for Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame

Maria Cicero Lindberg, a York state champion and record-breaker in cross country and track, went on to leave her mark at Boston College.

Elmhurst native Maria Cicero Lindberg will be inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame Sept. 7, according to a statement released Tuesday by the York High School athletic department. Cicero, who graduated from York High School in 2001, is only the seventh women's track and field athlete to receive this honor in the Hall of Fame's 42-year history. At York, she was the Illinois cross country state champion and state record-holder her senior year. That same year, she was the state indoor and outdoor track champion in the 1,600 and 3,200, where she set the state record of 10:17 in the 3,200 victory. The York boys cross country team's 27th state championship and first since 2006 is named the No. 1 sports accomplishment by Elmhurst high schools for the 2010 calendar year.

The York boys cross country team's four-year wait to be state champions again leads the list of the Elmhurst Patch 2010 high school sports accomplishments by teams and athletes from York, Immaculate Conception and Timothy Christian high schools.  Here's 25 of the biggest sports stories and accomplishments of 2010:    1. York boys cross country: The Dukes captured the program's 27th state title since Joe Newton became head coach in 1960 and first since 2006 by edging Lake Zurich 162-164 at the Class 3A state meet Nov. 6 at Peoria's Detweiller Park. Senior Jack Driggs (14:16 for 3.0 miles) took a strong second to two-time state champion Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg (13:54) as the Dukes' lone all-stater for a top-25 finish. But a great team …

Driggs, York Boys Get Back on Course in Palatine

Senior runner tops all for second straight weekend as Dukes rebound from third-place Peoria finish.

If there were any doubters of head coach Joe Newton's York boys cross country team after an out-of-character third-place finish in Peoria last weekend, they were silenced Saturday at the Palatine Invitational at Deer Grove Forest Preserve. Senior Jack Driggs, who took first overall in Peoria, was again the top individual runner, and four other Dukes finished in the top 20 as York finished first in a field of 30 boys teams. Driggs finished the 3-mile run in 14:33.0—more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Tommy King of New Trier (14:46.1). York senior Ron Hedman (15:07.9) finished ninth; sophomore Alex Mimlitz (15:13.1) finished 13th; senior Nick Gornick (15:17.4) finished 17th; and sophomore Scott Milling (15:20.3) finished …
