I now this article is old, but addison just did the same thing that Elmhurst did with Mike Kopp - let him retire, get his pension, and give him a newly create 6 figure job (with a new pension). Their police chief Timothy Hayden retired (drawing his pension) and got a job as the director of police. UPDATED: City Lets Morningside Out of Its Contract to Develop Hahn Street

Ordinances approved with no discussion by aldermen Monday.

Two ordinances related to the Hahn Street development passed as part of the City Council's consent agenda Monday with no discussion by aldermen. The City of Elmhurst ended its long-term relationship with Morningside Hahn LLC, the group that had been planning to develop the downtown parcel bordered by North Avenue, York Road, Addison and Third streets. The planning for Hahn Street began back in 2006, and the city entered a purchase agreement in 2008 with Morningside, which originally proposed 82 condominiums, seven townhomes and retail businesses on the ground floor. Last October, Morningside representatives presented a much-scaled-back plan that included less retail and apartment rentals. They said the economy could no longer support a …

re read the document. it's not a give back, more of a trade-off. the developer put up the 50K that's held in escrow. the city traded for his escrow by giving morningside cash and taking "title" to the escrow.   more ›

Elmhurst City Council Moves Incrementally on TIFs

Aldermen: We are still in the study phase.

As Elmhurst City Council members agreed Monday to continue along the process toward studying new tax increment financing districts, they also wanted to make a few things clear. First, 6th Ward Alderman Steve Morley stressed, neither the city's Development, Planning and Zoning Committee nor the City Council has “endorsed nor approved any new TIF districts at this time.” Second, while the council will be setting up a way to reimburse developer expenses related to TIFs, this does not obligate the city to spend any money at this point. The only money Elmhurst will spend is $24,000 to have a consultant study the feasibility of new TIFs in the city. Finally, aldermen want residents to know that the city's focus on three areas of study—North York…

this whole tif issue is really giving me a headache...the council is clueless. putting a tif on a flood plain? york and vallette - i have asked repeatedly for proof that a tif is the best way to encourage business development, but alas, no one can prove it 'cuz they don't want to. as for north york street - while it has been bandied about for the last few years, now is not the time - property …   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Letter: As She Begins Her Next Term, Diane Gutenkauf Says She Wants to Hear from You

Voter turnout in 1st Ward was higher than average in Elmhurst.

Dear Friends, My thanks belong to residents of Elmhurst's 1st Ward. Although overall voter turnout was low, almost 28 percent of eligible 1st Ward voters cast ballots—the highest turnout in town. I am humbled and gratified by this and am excited to move forward.  I will remain your voice on City Council and look forward to four more years as your representative. Thank you again for the phone calls, e-mails and text messages. Please keep contacting me with your concerns, kudos and ideas. I want to hear from you; it's the only way I can truly represent you. —Diane Gutenkauf

Election 2011

All Elmhurst City Council Incumbents Will Return to the Dais

Incumbent Diane Gutenkauf celebrates at Angelo's Ristorante.

In a private dining room on the second level of Angelo's Ristorante, Alderman Diane Gutenkauf was thrilled with the news that she will retain her position as 1st Ward alderman. She earned 61 percent of the vote to beat her opponent, John Raniere. "How am I feeling?" says Gutenkauf, flushed with the recent news of her win. "The adrenaline that was pumping through me earlier today because I was concerned has sort of mellowed out. I'm grateful that we've got the results—and the voters came through." Gutenkauf says her campaign operated on a meager budget. "I don't think it's responsible to spend a ton of money for a position like this," she said. "I walked the whole ward myself. I think people respected that." Also returning to the council …

City Manager Stands By ComEd's Claim that Twigs Cause Power Outages

Borchert: Birds, squirrels, twigs and kites keep ComEd on its toes.

A resident of southwest Elmhurst came to Monday’s City Council meeting armed—with a twig. Liz Widmaier of Saylor Street brought the slender shoot to show council members what ComEd officials say caused her latest power outage on Sunday. In the past, when her power was out due to tree contact, she “always assumed it was a trunk of a tree, a limb of a tree, or even a branch,” she said. “This is what I would consider to be a twig.” She said ComEd’s response to outages has changed, as well. “Their new tactic is to call and tell us when our power is back on,” she said. “What they add is that they can’t guarantee it will remain on for the rest of the day.” ComEd needs to come up with a better solution than tree trimming, she said. “If this is …

Elmhurst Memorial One Step Closer to 192-foot Tower

Aldermen say they're concerned about setting a precedent.

Aldermen took the first step Monday toward approval of a plan that would allow Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare to construct a 192-foot communications tower at its Church Court Business Center. The tower would have nine microwave dishes and would allow EMH facilities, including the new hospital at York and Roosevelt roads opening this summer, to have immediate communication with each other. The additional height is needed because the dishes need to be in the line of sight of other towers. Following council policy, aldermen approved a report by the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee. An ordinance allowing the tower should be on the agenda at the next council meeting. The Zoning and Planning Commission have also turned in a positive …
