Elmhurst College head football coach Tim Lester says the team has much to be proud of this season.
Elmhurst College record-breaking football season came to an end in Minnesota Saturday, when the Bluejays fell to the University of St. Thomas Tommies 24-17 in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. According to the Bluejays website, Elmhurst started strong, scoring the first 14 points of the game, but St. Thomas came back to lead 21-14 at the half. The Bluejays had a couple of chances for a comeback in the second half, but they were held off by the Tommies' defense and had to settle for a field goal. Elmhurst College Bluejays (10-1) will take on the University of St. Thomas Tommies in Round 2 of NCAA Division III Championships at noon Saturday, Nov. 24, at O'Shaughnessy Stadium, 2115 Summit Ave., St. Paul, Minn. The #3 ranked Tommies (11-0) beat St. Norbert College 48-17 on Nov. 17. Elmhurst took care of Coe College last week 27-24 in its first-ever playoff victory. To add a little icing to the playoff cake, Elmhurst College running back Scottie Williams is one of 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, which recognizes the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III.

Elmhurst College, for the first time in its history, made it to the NCAA Football Championships, and on Saturday the Bluejays won their first playoff game to advance to Round 2. The 17th-ranked Bluejays beat 10th-ranked Coe College 27-24 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday. After a hot 4-0 record to start the 2010 season, the Elmhurst College football team cooled off quickly, going 2-4 in their last six games. The Bluejays would finish tied for fifth in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, with a 6-4 overall record, 3-4 in conference play. “We can’t let another season get away like last season,” said all-conference junior running back Scottie Williams. “We lost a couple games by seven points, and we just can’t have that this year. Every week has to be a big week for us.” The 6-4 finish last season was a two-game swing from the team's 4-6 record in 2009.
