Furniture, Lamps, Printers and More; Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is Having a 'Garage Sale,' of Sorts

Find deals for the conference room, waiting room or home office.

Elmhurst Memorial Hospital invites all bargain hunters to a special furniture sale on Saturday, March 23, at its Berteau Avenue campus, 200 Berteau. In 2011, Elmhurst Memorial moved into its 50-acre, state-of-the-art campus on Brush Hill Road. However, many quality furniture items, such as couches, conference tables and lamps, still remain at the old hospital site. Plans for the Berteau campus remain unknown. A senior housing facility originally planned for the site fell through last fall because building codes were prohibitive, according to the developer, Belmont Village. The CyberKnife cancer treatment center will relocate from the Berteau campus to the main campus on Brush Hill Road later this year. Sale Details From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on…

Senior Housing at Berteau Campus Falls Through; Developer Cites Too-strict Building Codes

Experts will review “belt and suspenders” building code.

Excessively strict building codes are being cited as the reason a plan for senior housing at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital's Berteau Campus recently fell through. Belmont Village, a company that has developed senior housing facilities in Glenview and Oak Park, was interested in the 11-acre site on Berteau Avenue that will soon be vacated by Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The developer wanted to use multiple layers of drywall with metal supports in building the new facility. But according to Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp, city code mandates that multi-unit buildings, such as condominiums, hotels and dorms, have concrete block support every 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, allowing the units to withstand two hours of fire. On Monday, the Development…

@Bill Angel While I, like you, believe the code amendments are too restrictive, I think you are doing Mike Kopp a great disservice with your comments. I have always found him and his department to be very supportive of businessmen and development in Elmhurst. True, he is a former Fire Chief, and I would expect him to show bias towards fire safety. But if my memory serves correctly, most of these …   more ›

Inpatient Services at Elmhurst Memorial's Berteau Campus Will End Feb. 28

Crain's is reporting the date, but the closures are not a surprise.

Elmhurst Memorial Hospital will close its 19-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and 38-bed Transitional Care Center, located at the old hospital campus at 200 Berteau Avenue, in February, Crains Chicago Business is reporting. The closings were announced last fall. Elmhurst Patch reported in October that Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare planned to close the units as part of its efforts to convert the property into a full-service senior care center. "EMHC’s programs and services that are currently located on the campus will either move or close in order to facilitate the redevelopment of the site over the next 24 months," the hospital announced in October. The hospital is searching for a partner to operate the senior facility, which will offer…

This is truly disappointing and leaves Elmhurst residents without access to critical inpatient behavioral health services within our community. The number of inpatient behavioral health beds across the state of IL is diminishing and there is a serious lack of these services in DuPage County to begin with. I wonder how Elmhurst Memorial Hospital will retain their non-profit status as I am sure …   more ›
