Choose Your Weapon: Hoops or Laps

Still time to sign up for local events to raise money for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

All over Elmhurst, the fund-raising has kicked into high gear for this year's Relay for Life events. If you've never been to a Relay for Life overnight event, it's the stuff memories are made of—a blend of inspiration, hope and camaraderie all centered around the fight against cancer. It's difficult to hold back emotions as the survivors take their lap around the track to start the event, or the luminaria is lit in honor of those who have been lost. And we've all lost someone we love to this terrible disease, or at least know someone who has. Benefitting the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is now more than 25 years old. The events involve an all-night trek around a track by dozens—or even hundreds—of participants who have formed …

Teams thank teachers, families and administrators for helping to make it happen.

The Immaculate Conception High School Knights scored big in helping the fight against cancer. On Jan. 19, the girls and boys varsity basketball teams hosted Play for the Cure to raise funds for the American Cancer Society through the Coaches vs Cancer program. ICHS students, families and alumni, all decked out in pink (for breast cancer) and royal blue (for colon cancer), filled the IC gym to not only support Play for the Cure but to cheer the Knights in two hard-fought games against the visiting Green Wave of St. Edward’s. On the court, the Lady Knights lost a tight game that came down to the final seconds, while the boys team notched another conference win in front of the home crowd.  The Lady Knights wore special pink T-shirts for warm-…

"Gentle Giant" Goes Beyond the Game to Help Others

Former NBA player Bruce Flowers of Elmhurst teaches others to love the real meaning of sports.

It was a chilly June evening, and Bruce Flowers of Elmhurst was hitting the links with his friend Tim Bransky at Eaglewood Resort in Itasca.
As he practiced his putting, Bransky, a Wood Dale resident, took some coaching tips and compliments from Flowers. Bransky and several Special Olympics golfers from the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association played with Flowers as part of the organization’s unified golfing program. Special Olympics participants pair up with non-disabled partners as they alternate hitting the ball on a nine-hole course.
It's one of many ways Flowers, 54, a former NBA player, passes on his athleticism and sportsmanship to help others. Though Flowers has tried every sport imaginable, basketball was his …
