Candidates answered questions on Hahn Street, TIF, sustainability and getting along.
The three Elmhurst aldermen vying to be Elmhurst's next mayor participated in the League of Women Voters candidate forum Sunday afternoon. Questions posed to them from both the League and from audience members focused on tax increment financing, how they would work to bring the council together and development of Hahn Street, among other things. One of the first questions asked by the audience was, "Do you have aspirations for higher office?" Elmhurst's former mayor, Pete DiCianni, was elected to the DuPage County Board before finishing his term as mayor. All three candidates answered, without hesitation, that they are not seeking higher office and would serve out their full term if elected. Related: City Council Candidates Tackle Finances…

We're starting with aldermen candidates; check back for coverage of the school board portion of the forum.
Elmhurst residents could have been doing a lot of different things on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but a good many of them filled Elmhurst City Council chambers to hear what their candidates for city, park and school board have to offer. Elmhurst League of Women Voters, sponsor of Sunday's forum, invited all contested candidates running in the April 9 Consolidated Elections to answer questions in public—and for the local cable channel. The forum will be aired at a later date. By the time alderman and mayoral candidates were on the dais, League representatives were hauling in more chairs for the observers standing in the back. Candidates in wards 2, 3 and 6 (Norman Leader, Michael Bram and Jim Kennedy, respectively) are uncontested and were …

Darlene Heslop says she will pay all expenses incurred by the city of Elmhurst and District 205 related to her petition challenges in both races.
Darlene Heslop dropped her petition challenge against incument District 205 School Board candidate Jim Collins and newcomer Emily Bastedo Friday. Her only comment on the subject is that she will pay for all legal costs incurred in this challenge, as well as her challenge to Alderman Pat Wagner in his re-election campaign for the 7th Ward. The challenge against Wagner was dismissed Monday. But Collins shared some details of the now-moot school board candidate challenge Friday afternoon. "I think it's important that this get out in public so people understand the issues (Heslop) was raising," Collins said. He said Heslop's main objection was related to an Illinois statute that actually applies only to partisan elections. Unknown to Collins, …
Jim Collins and Emily Bastedo can continue their campaigns for District 205 Board.
The Elmhurst District 205 Electoral Board hearing scheduled for 4 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 11, has been canceled. The hearing originally was scheduled to hear petition challenges filed by Elmhurst resident Darlene Heslop against two School Board candidates, board President Jim Collins and newcomer Emily Bastedo. According to an announcement from the District 205 administrative office, the hearing was canceled because Heslop withdrew her objections to the nomination papers of both candidates. Objections to Wagner's nominating petitions dismissed Monday.
Fourth Ward resident Darlene Heslop's objections to 7th Ward Alderman Pat Wagner's nominating petitions were unanimously dismissed by Elmhurst's Electoral Board Monday on the grounds that Heslop does not live in Wagner's ward. Wagner is the incumbent candidate running to retain his seat in the April 9 Consolidated Election. Heslop claimed that Wagner's nominating petitions were inconsistent with respect to how he referred to the position he was seeking. But Wagner's attorney, Michael Botti, presented a motion to dismiss the objections, which was ultimately accepted by the Electoral Board. Botti referred to state election law and argued that only residents of the 7th Ward could file objections to petitions from candidates in that ward, a …
