Sandburg Middle School is located at the eastern gateway to Elmhurst on St. Charles Road. Originally called Elmhurst Junior High School, Sandburg was renamed in 1960 to honor the American writer Carl Sandburg, who lived on York Street from 1919 to 1930. Sandburg spoke at the dedication of the school in 1960. Principal Amy Read leads the students, 94 percent of whom met or exceeded state testing standards in 2008-09.
