As Kids Head Back to School, Allow Plenty of Time to Maneuver Construction

Please keep chins up and eyes out for all those construction workers. It'll all be over soon.

Many of the major thoroughfares in Elmhurst are under construction as the city and the Illinois Department of Transportation proceed with repaving and bridge work. And, some of that will directly affect the start of school in District 205 on Monday.

In fact, resurfacing work in front of York High School is scheduled to begin on Monday, and with construction work being done at the York High School Aquatics Center, getting students into the building may be a bit of a challenge.

Work on York's aquatics center is wrapping up, but for awhile students are not allowed access in or out on the north side of the building. District 205 sent a message to parents this week letting them know students may only enter or exit on the south side until that work is complete, which is expected to be Sept. 10.

Of course, with road work on St. Charles on the south side, traffic could be a bit of a challenge, depending on where that work is focused Monday morning. The district is urging families to allow plenty of extra time.

In addition to St. Charles Road, resurfacing work also will taking place on Route 83 from North Avenue to Irving Park Road, beginning this month.  Both projects will be completed by October.

Other Road Work in Elmhurst

IDOT is in the process of bridge work on Lake Street over Interstate 290. The work requires nightly lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-290 at Lake, and the shoulders are closed in both directions. One of two lanes on the ramp from westbound I-290 to Lake Street is closed. The project is expected to be finished on Oct. 21.

In July, IDOT began resurfacing 2.44 miles of North Avenue between Villa and County Line Road in Elmhurst. That work is expected to be done next month, but drivers are dealing with high travel times in this area, especially at York and North, a particularly challenging and busy intersection.

Butterfield Road and Commonwealth Lane intersection improvements also continue to make life challenging for drivers. That work, which began in June, is expected to be completed in October.

And, if you need a few more barricades to maneuver, IDOT also will begin bridge rehabilitation on Butterfield Road over Roosevelt Road in Oakbrook Terrace beginning Monday, Aug. 19. There will be two stages of construction and only one lane will be open in each direction during each stage. The anticipated completion date for this project is Sept. 21.
