Rep. Conroy Introduces Legislation to Make it a Felony to Conceal Guns in Schools

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) introduced legislation, HB 3669, to amend the state’s conceal and carry law by adding tougher penalties for concealing a gun in a school.

“While reading through the concealed carry bill that passed the legislature, I was struck by the omission of stricter penalties for concealing a gun in a school,” said Conroy. “Schools should be safe from concealed guns and we need to make sure that the law is corrected.”

The new concealed carry law does not distinguish between differing offenses in the law.  Any violation of the law will result in a misdemeanor for the first or second offense and a felony on the third offense. Conroy’s bill, House Bill 3669, enforces stricter penalties—a felony on the first offense—if a concealed gun is brought into a school.

“As legislators we need to work through the new conceal and carry law to ensure that it is implemented as safely and responsibly as possible,” said Conroy. “The toughest penalties should be enforced when we are dealing with the safety of our children. This amendment is an important change to improve the law and protect our kids.”
