Conroy Says “No” to Tax Increase Extension

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The following is a statement from State Rep. Deb Conroy on her opposition to extending the tax rates passed under the 2011 income tax increase:

“In January 2015, an income tax increase that passed before I took office is scheduled to be rolled back. Many have argued that the current, higher tax rates should remain in place. I reject that idea and support allowing families to receive the tax relief they deserve.”

“What I have found in talking to local residents at their doors over the last two years should come as no surprise. As the state works to climb out of an economic recession, middle-class families struggle, too. The cost of living goes up, property taxes rise and many have lost their jobs. The needed tax relief families and small businesses have been counting on is nearly in sight, and it should not be denied.”

“I understand this is a difficult issue. But making tough decisions is what the Legislature has been entrusted to do. We have a responsibility to do what is in the best interests of the people we serve, and I believe there is still more work to do to fund the state’s priorities without taking more from taxpayers. We need a new plan that does not rely on extending the tax increase.”
