York Varsity Tennis Players Statebound

Three varsity tennis players from York Community High School are statebound after winning the IHSA sectionals at Berens Park this weekend.

York qualified one singles player, Brenden Peterson and one doubles team, Jake Shostak and Spencer Kost, for the IHSA boys’ state tennis finals at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights Thursday through Saturday, May 29 through May 31.

This is Peterson’s second consecutive appearances in the state finals meet. Peterson earned a berth going 3-1 in the tournament. With those three wins, Peterson broke a 24-year-old school record for single-season wins (37). The record was previously held by Eddie Okino who had 36 wins in 1990.

York’s head tennis coach, Tres Heimann, says this has been a special year for Peterson.

“He has worked extremely hard and we have seen him improve every year he has played, but this year it has been a giant leap,” Heimann said. “He was ready right from the start this season as he won his first 20 matches. He has been able to read his opponents’ tendencies during a match very well and then adjust his game to put himself in a good position to be successful. He has a very consistent game and has a very good mental approach going into matches. He has been a pleasure to coach and I look forward to seeing him compete in the State Tournament.”

Making their first appearance in the state tournament are doubles team qualifiers Jake Shostak.

Doubles – Spencer Kost and Jake Shostak (York) – State Qualifiers

4th Place out of 18 teams at I.H.S.A. Sectional

2nd Match – Spencer Kost/Jake Shostak (York) defeated Spencer Schillerstrom/Sam Meegan (Downers Grove North) 6-3, 7-5

3rd Match (Semi-Final) – Zach Wood/Ryan McMillan (Downers Grove South) defeated Spencer Kost/Jake Shostak (York) 6-4, 6-3

4th Match (3rd Place) – Mantas Kisilieus/Chandler Downs (Downers Grove North) defeated Spencer Kost/Jake Shostak (York) 6-1, 6-2.
