York Sports Roundup: Basketball, Bowling and Wrestling Teams All Enjoyed a Winning Week

York boys basketball team is 4-0 as they head into their next game Friday at Hinsdale Central.

Boys Basketball:

The York boys basketball program had a very successful Thanksgiving week. The sophomore team won the Prospect tournament by defeating St. Viator high school in overtime after being down by 11 to start the 4th quarter.  They finished the weekend 4-0.

The varsity dropped the opening game to Niles North by 6 but then rallied to win 3 consecutive games and taking 3rd place in the Palatine Thanksgiving tournament. On the way, they defeated Rolling Meadows 70-50, Wheaton North 70-68 in overtime, and for the 3rd place game got by Deerfield 49-35.

David Cohn led the team in scoring, averaging 24 points per game. Not far behind was Matt DiFrancesca.  Both players earned All Tournament Team, which was selected by opposing coaches.

Next game for the York Dukes is Friday, Dec. 2, at Hinsdale Central.  Sophomores tip off at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30. After a short three days off, the Dukes will travel to Oak Park River Forest High School on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to take on the Huskies.

Girls Basketball:

The York Girls Basketball Team has a solid 4-1 record following its inaugural Thanksgiving tournament Nov. 21-23.

Nov. 21—In the inaugural York Thanksgiving Tournament, the Dukes of York stormed out to a 37-19 halftime lead and cruised to a 61-31 victory over St. Charles North.  Anna Bell Lansdowne led York with 13 points, 2 steals and 4 assists. Megan Holmes added 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals, Alyssa Kovatchis contributed 10 points and 3 assists on her birthday, while Alex Harrell chipped in 9 points and 8 rebounds.  Tawny Tucci played a balanced game with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists and Nicole Kosanovich was strong off the bench with 2 points, 1 steal and 5 rebounds.

Nov. 22–As the York Thanksgiving Tournament continued, the Dukes defeated the Prospect Knights 65-49 after a first half that saw them race to a 38-21 lead.  Megan Holmes led York with a career high 14 points, 2 rebounds and 5 steals, Anna Bell Lansdowne added 13 points and 2 rebounds, Tawny Tucci chipped in 9 points, 5 assists and 2 steals while Alyssa Kovatchis contributed 7 points and 3 assists.  Molly Schlecht was key off the bench with 2 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists and Hailey Park added 9 points.

Nov. 23—In the championship game of the Thanksgiving Tournament, the Dukes of York were edged by 10th ranked Neuqua Valley 44-41.  Anna Bell Lansdowne led York with 15 points and 3 rebounds, Molly Holmes added 8 points and a career  high 6 rebounds off the bench while Alyssa Kovatchis contributed 3 steals and 4 assists.  Alex Harrell powered in 6 points to go with 7 rebounds and Hailey Park contributed 6 points and 2 assists.  Tawny Tucci was honored on the All-Tournament team after averaging 10 points per game to start the season.

Girls Bowling:

The girls’ bowling team enjoyed victories on both levels Nov. 22 against Morton, Addison Trail and Willowbrook.  Varsity had a total pin fall of 2,756, with junior varsity scoring 2,533.  High games on varsity were Cate Lawrence (181), Marisa Stallmann (178), Morgan Pruitt (177) and Emily Davelis (171).  At the JV level, promising newcomer Katelyn Thurnall had a 509 series with high game 190, and returning junior Linnea Wethekam scored a high game of 171.

Wrestling:

York had an impressive showing at the Jacobs Mega Duals last weekend. (According to a Chicago Tribune blog post, it was coach Clarke's 400th win).
