York Roundup: Basketball, Swimming, Track and Wrestling

Senior Night is Friday for boys basketball as they take on Downers North.

Thanks to York coaches, who provided this week in review for Feb. 6-11.

Boys Basketball:

The Dukes traveled to Glenbard West Feb. 10 and came home with a 68-41 victory. David Cohn finished with 29 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Matt DiFrancesca had 12 points and 5 assists. Jake Rzeszutko had 10 points 5 assists. The Dukes lost to Oak Park 57-35 on Tuesday Feb. 14. The Dukes take on Downers Grove North Feb. 17. It will be Senior Night, as well as Paint the Gym Purple for Relay for Life. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Swimming (Boys):

The Swimming Dukes hosted Proviso West Feb. 7 in a Senior Night dual meet.  Leading the victorious Dukes were their nine seniors, Bobo Barabolak, Colin Belfiore, Scott Doberstein, Adam Gabriel, Kyle Landers, Andrew Matsas, Keith Pierzchala, Aaron Sebonia, and Nathan Swartz.  Event winners were: Barabolak, 200 free; Matsas, 200IM; Swartz, 50 and 100 free; Kesselring, 100 fly; and Pierzchala, 100 breast.

On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Dukes will host the state Sectional meet. Swimmers who win their event or meet extremely difficult time requirements then qualify for the state meet the following week. Good Luck to the Dukes Sectional Team: seniors Barabolak, Belfiore, Doberstein, Landers, Matsas and Sebonia; juniors John Arcaro, Dan Funk, Tyler Krawzyck, Patrick McKenna, Nick Salek and Alex Waldherr; and sophomores Matt Bindeman, Joe Kesselring and Matt Rodriguez.

Girls Track:

The York Girls took first place as a team on both the varsity and freshman/sophomore levels at the track and field York Indoor Invitation #1 on Feb. 11.  

Breakout Varsity Performances: 

  • 800m Relay: First—Frigo, Spencer, Smith, Fisher
  • 300m: Second—Erin McHugh
  • 55m hurdles: First—Amanda Huster
  • 400m: First—Michelle Frigo
  • 1600m: First—Emma Fisher, with a time already under state qualifying
  • 400m Relay:First—Sorrentino, Huster, McGowan, Nocek
  • Pole vault: Second—Chloe Grotto
  • Shot put: First—Tanisha Tate

Breakout Freshman/Sophomore Performances:

  • 55m: First—Kailey Schwartz
  • 4x400m relay: First—Schwartz, Biegler, Simo, Jelenik
  • Triple jump: First—Biegler
  • Pole vault: First—Abby Waltz

Wrestling:

Congratulations to York Wrestlers Denzel King, Troy Valdez, and Noah Fleckenstein for qualifying for the state wrestling tournament at the University of Illinois. Also congratulations to JP Finan, Brandon Kupczyk and Joe Giordano, who are alternates to the state tournament.
