York High School Sports Roundup: Basketball, and Track and Field

Boys basketball team takes on Lake Park in Friday's regional championship game.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The York Dukes finished the regular season 21-8 with a 56-45 victory over Morton Feb. 22.  On Feb. 28, the state playoffs started with a 54-47 victory over Elk Grove, pushing the Dukes into the regional final set for Friday, March 2.  David Cohn led the team with 21 points.
 
Friday's regional championship game is against Lake Park at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Park west campus site in Roselle.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Dukes of York participated in their first invitational of the 2012 season, at Proviso West High School. Out of 12 teams, the varsity placed third with 64 points behind champion Neaqua Valleyʼs 67 and Lake Park (66).

The Dukes were led by sophomore Nathan Mroz and senior Nick Sgarbossa. Nathan ran a state leading 4:27.1 mile, and Nick kept his reputation as one of the best vaulters in the state, with a 14ʼ 9”.

Yorkʼs other first-place finish was by Eric Glaubke, Billy Clink, Jack Achen and Chris May in the 3200 Relay.

The freshman-sophomore team finished in a tie for the championship with Lyons Township High School with 93 points. York was led by sophomore Jarvis HIll and his victory in the 200, freshman Matt Plowman and his first-place in the 3200, and sophomore Zach Zars and his first- place in pole vault.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

At the Proviso West Quad Feb 23, the York Girls varsity and freshman-sophomore teams both took first place.
