York Fall Sports Roundup: Dukes' Wark Qualifies For Boys Golf State Meet

Junior Joe Wark earns his first trip to the state golf meet, football team faces state power Glenbard West coming off a last-second loss to Lyons Township, volleyball and cross country teams go after outright conference championships.

In 2010, York junior boys golfer Joe Wark missed an individual berth to sectionals by losing a one-hole playoff for the last advancing spot.

Wark not only reached sectionals this season, but he also qualified for the state meet for the first time with shots to spare.

Wark’s 3-over-par 74 earned a berth to the Class 3A state meet via the Bartlett Sectional Monday (Oct. 10) at Bartlett Hills Golf Course by being among the top 10 individuals who were not members of the three qualifying teams.

Wark tied for fifth place overall and earned the fourth individual berth behind a round with an eagle, birdie and six bogeys.

York juniors Tanner Obal (82) and Kyle Kopinski (90) also competed but missed the individual state cut of 76, which would have resulted in a sudden-death playoff. Obal also was an individual sectional qualifier last year after beating Wark in a regional playoff for the last advancing spot.

Wark continued his postseason momentum, which began with a 10th-place 76 for all-conference medalist honors at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet Sept. 27.

“He’s put himself in one of the top groups at the state tournament, and he deserves to be there,” York coach Jim Borel said. “We knew he definitely had potential to do well, and we’re really proud of him for advancing. It kind of helps us because we have a lot of junior talent. He kind of gets a feel of what the state tournament’s like and we’re very optimistic for next year and years down the road.”

At the Addison Trail Regional Oct. 4 at Maple Meadows, also York’s home course, Wark (7-over-par 77), Obal (79) and Kopinski (85) advanced by being among the top 10 individuals not among the three advancing teams.

York (328) was fifth, just three strokes behind third-place Addison Trail for the last advancing team berth. Also competing for the Dukes were juniors Charlie Pozen (87), one stroke shy of the cutoff score, and Adam Gracik (89) and senior Sam Kociak (90).

On Oct. 5, the Dukes were second at the Elmhurst Classic with Timothy Christian and Immaculate Conception at Maple Meadows. The Dukes were edged for first place by Timothy 160-162 as Obal, Pozen and Gracik shots 39s and Kociak added a 45.

Football

The York varsity football team suffered a tough to Lyons Township in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action Friday (Oct. 7) in Elmhurst.

The loss kept the Dukes (5-2, 3-1 in Silver) from clinching a playoff berth with six victories and dropped them to second place in the Silver behind state-ranked Glenbard West (7-0, 4-0), their next opponent at 1 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 15) in Glen Ellyn.

York shared last year’s Silver title with LT and Glenbard West. The Lions (4-3, 3-2) won Friday on a 42-yard field goal by Jake Elliott in the final seconds after Elliott pulled out a victory over Oak Park-River Forest with a 52-yarder the previous game.

York quarterback Joe Lucca rushed 10 times for 103 yards and a TD 21-for-44 for 240 yards and 3 TDs, two of them to David Byerley (7 catches, 87 yards) and another to Jordan Preuss (6 catches, 69 yards). Byerley TD catch in the final minute put the Dukes ahead 27-26, but the two-point conversion failed.

Defensively, Connor O’Malley (14 total tackles), Joe Dickert (13 total tackles), Jake Rzeszutko (13 total tackles, 2 interceptions) and Kevin Szeluga (13 total tackles, tackle for loss) each had double-digit tackles.

Rzeszutko also had two of the Dukes’ two interceptions, the other by Drew Mueller. JP Finan and Ryan Maher added eight total tackles apiece and Jason Scally and Frank Bertucci recorded tackles for loss.

In lower-level football action against LT, the York sophomores (7-0, 5-0) remained undefeated with a 26-12 victory. The freshman A team (6-1, 3-1) and the freshman B team (6-1, 3-1) suffered their first losses of the season by respective scores of 42-16 and 34-14. The sophomore team (3-4, 0-4) lost 28-24.

The Dukes take on Glenbard West at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in Glen Ellyn.

Wethekam was York’s lone individual sectional qualifier in 2010. The York girls tennis team will compete at the York Sectional Friday and Saturday. Top-four finishers in singles and doubles advance to the state tournament.

On Saturday (Oct. 8), the Dukes finished third at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Tournament in Oak Park and fourth in the final overall standings.

The overall standings combine points from Silver dual victories and points earned at the Silver Meet. York (47 points) finished two points behind third-place Lyons Township (49) after entering Saturday trailing the Lions 26-22.

Hinsdale Central won its 10th straight overall title with 83 out of a possible 84 points with Glenbard West (56) second. Oak Park-River Forest (45) was a close fifth.

York junior Ellen Barry and sophomore Blaire Porter (No. 2 doubles) and senior Abby Mazzocco and sophomore Randi Wilson (No. 4 doubles) both reached the finals and finished second to Hinsdale Central, which won all seven flights. Barry and Porter lost to seniors Kristy Hamilton and Jackie Altansarnai 6-0, 6-2, and Mazzocco and Wilson were beaten by sophomores Rachel Ballantine and Alex Usher 6-2, 6-0.

Torrie Graham and Gabby Riek (No. 1 doubles) and Dana Chamberlin and Laurel Chamberlin (No. 3 doubles) were third to also earn all-conference medals. Emma Stuefen (No. 2 singles) was fourth and Angela Avgerinos (No. 1 singles) and Annie Rivera (No. 3 singles) were fifth.

York avenged regular-season dual losses to Glenbard West at No. 4 doubles and to LT at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The third-place victories were big ones.

Graham and Riek had been 0-3 lifetime against Glenbard West’s Molly Hennessy and Sam Reedy and came back from a set down to prevail 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. The Chamberlin sisters outlasted LT’s Annie Wiedner and Gabby Pavletic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 after trailing 3-1 in the third set.

York’s 2010 state qualifiers included three-time state doubles qualifier Graham and Riek and Barry and Dana Chamberlin as doubles teams and junior Maria Avgerinos in singles. Avgerinos sat out the Silver Meet to rest a back injury that flared up against LT Oct. 3 but is scheduled to play at sectionals.

On Tuesday (Oct. 11), the Dukes completed their regular season by beating Neuqua Valley 3-2 in Aurora in the fifth-place match for the 16-team Downers Grove South Invite that had been canceled Sept. 3.

The Chamberlins won the decisive match for York (16-12) at No. 3 doubles with an incredible rally, beating Kayla Benz and Leah Keating in a third-set super tiebreaker 2-6, 7-5, (10-5) after trailing 5-3 in the second set.

The York girls cross country team, ranked No. 12 in Class 3A by DyeStat Illinois, competes at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet Saturday (Oct. 15) at Lyons Township’s south campus in Western Springs.

Girls race times are 11 a.m. (freshmen), noon (sophomores), 1 p.m. (junior varsity) and 2 p.m. (varsity).

The overall Silver titles on the varsity, JV and sophomore levels are a 50-50 combination of dual and Silver Meet standings. The freshman title is based solely on Saturday’s results.

The varsity is going for a third consecutive overall title, winning the last two outright. In 2010, York finished second to Downers Grove North at the Silver Meet but took first place overall because the Trojans finished third in the dual standings.

On Thursday (Oct. 6), the Dukes won the showdown for first place in the dual standings by beating No. 6 Glenbard West 26-29 and host Proviso West 15-50 in Hillside.

The Dukes’ Emma Fisher (18:04) won the 3.09-mile race by 19 seconds over Glenbard West’s Madeline Perez. Kayla Spencer (18:52) and Shari Lund (19:29) took third and fifth with Michelle Frigo (19:43) and Allison Smith (19:55) eighth and ninth and Caroline Hogan (20:10) and Dayle Mueller (20:20) 11th and 12th.

York finished a perfect 6-0 in Silver duals on all three levels. In the Dukes’ final dual action Thursday (Oct. 6) in Elmhurst, the varsity defeated No. 24 Glenbard West 19-44, the sophomores won 15-50 and the freshmen prevailed 19-36. All three teams also defeated Proviso West.
