York Boys Cross Country

The York boys cross country team finished third on the varsity level and second on the sophomore level at Peoria Notre Dame’s Richard Spring Memorial Invitational Sept. 17 at Detweiller Park, annual site of the state meet.

Scott Milling was 11th (14:46) for the varsity (82 points). Nathan Mroz (15:19) won the sophomore race by 19 seconds, and Matt Plowman was sixth (15:57). Palatine edged the Dukes 129-130 for the title.

On Sept. 15, the Dukes opened West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual action at Lyons Township and swept the Lions and Hinsdale Central on all three levels.

The varsity defeated Hinsdale Central 18-45 and LT 15-50 with Billy Clink (14:56) and Milling (14:59) taking the top two spots.

The sophomores swept Hinsdale Central and LT 19-42 with Mroz (15:43) and Gabe Marrero (15:50) finishing 1-2. The freshmen prevailed over both LT and Hinsdale Central 22-36 with Plowman (10:40) easily winning the 2.0-mile race.

York Girls Cross Country

The York girls cross country team placed sixth on the varsity level out of more than 60 teams at the Peoria Notre Dame’s Richard Spring Memorial Invitational Sept. 17 at Detweiller Park, annual site of the state meet.

Junior Emma Fisher ran a personal-best 17:00 for 3.0 miles, breaking the previous invite record, to finish second to Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan (16:44). Kayla Spencer (13th, personal-record 17:34) and Shari Lund (39th, 18:09) also earned medals for York (271 points).

The junior varsity, led by Kristen O’Malley and Katherine Schlemmel, took first place in the Open Girls race. The third-place sophomore team (130 points) was led by Allison Smith and Dayle Mueller, who were 17th and 18th in 19:30.

On Sept. 15, the Dukes opened West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual action at East End Park against visiting Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central.

The varsity edged LT 27-29 and defeated Hinsdale Central 19-42.

Fisher won the race in 16:05 to crush the previous 2.83-mile course record of 16:29.4 from 2007 by an incredible 25 seconds. Fisher was stacked against the returning state runner-up Jill Hardies of Hinsdale Central. They ran stride for stride over the course until the final lap. With 1,000 meters to go, Fisher began to slowly pull away. Hardies’ second-place 16:13 also easily broke the previous course record.

In the team competition, York began the race with a decisive lead but as the race progressed into the final mile, two LT girls edged up on Lund, passed her and closed in on Spencer. The key to the Dukes winning lay in Spencer’s ability to hold them off and pass LT’s Lisa Gordon. In the last half mile, Spencer turned on her jets and cruised past Gordon into the final chute to take third (16:54).

The sophomores swept Hinsdale Central 23-36 and LT 23-36. Alyssa Adam was second in the race (18:01).

The junior varsity defeated Hinsdale Central 15-50 and lost to LT 26-33 despite Kailee Sweeney (18:37) and Schlemmel (18:38) finishing second and third.
