York Alum’s Face Hawks Augustana College on North Avenue Billboard

Erik Westerburg is a two-time Academic All-American at Augustana College; his image is getting some additional publicity in his hometown these days.

When Erik Westerburg came back home to Elmhurst from Augustana College recently, the junior football star and York Community High School alumnus discovered he’d been there all along. His face is promoting Augustana on a gigantic North Avenue billboard.

According to The Suburban Life, the 6-3, 210-pound middle linebacker (who wears no. 41) is team captain for the Vikings, as well as a two-time Academic All-American as a math major—apparently, a fitting image for the Rock Island school to broadcast in his hometown.

Erik has decided to become a high school math teacher, York Principal Diana Smith said in an email to York staff last month.

"Apparently his experience (at York) motivated him to try to inspire other kids to love math as much as he does," she said.

Westerberg visited York on Feb. 28 to observe a few math classes.

"I know he will be a great role model for our kids and for his future students," Smith said.

Westerberg told Suburban Life the whole billboard experience has been "unique."

"I'm just humbled by it. My family, my teachers and coaches and friends helped me get up there for sure," he said.

I agree with you but I don't know if we as just citizen's can do anything to stop that practice. IRead More wish that each cyclist had to have a license, and that it was enforced by laws and police, on the bike so that people could report occurrences and have the person receive a ticket just like a person driving an auto. That would make sense.

A couple of years ago, Villa Park installed "State Law- must stop for pedestrians" signsRead More on the roadways where the Great Western and Prairie Paths cross. I saw a big increase in path users barreling across the streets with no regard for the stop signs on the path.

I was really hoping that the Elmhurst Police would sound in on this info-I do understand kids willRead More be kids, but if one of them is hurt, that adult driver will need to live with that for the rest of their life-so let's come up with a solution for both bicyclist and cars to be in harmony. I really think that a step up in enforcement in the bicycle laws would help-just like the drunk driving laws-believe me the bicycle laws are just as important.
