Elmhurst Loses Long-time York High School Coach, Former Athletic Director Jack Tosh

Tosh passed away on Monday, Feb. 11. "Jack touched many, many lives in the York community," York Principal Diana Smith said.

Jack Tosh, former York High School athletic director and coach, died Monday, Feb. 11, according to information released this afternoon by York Principal Diana Smith.

Tosh was the namesake of the annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic basketball  tournament. York swept the tournament this year, beating Conant High School 30-29 in the championship game Dec. 29. The championship was undoubtedly a source of pride for Coach Tosh, Smith said.

"Jack touched many, many lives in the York community," Smith said in an email to York staff. "Many of our staff members are close friends, and several were hired by Jack and coached alongside him."

Tosh earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Northwestern University, where he also played baseball. In the 1960s and 70s, he taught and coached at Evanston and DeKalb high schools. He was named athletic director at DeKalb before moving to York in the mid-70s.

At York, he coached basketball, football, golf and baseball, and served as athletic director until his retirement in 1990. He is an honored member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

"Our condolences to Jack's wife and family, and to all of his York and Elmhurst friends," Smith said. "We will share arrangements when they are finalized."
