Senate adjourns, passes bill with no cuts in Local Government Distributive Funds

Update from Springfield.

In the last hour of the Spring Session, the Senate passed Senate Bill 335, a budget implementation measure that makes no cuts to Local Government Distributive Funds to municipalities.

In the weeks leading up to the end of the month, I have been very vocal about not taking further money away from local government in the state’s attempt to rectify the state budget, as Governor Quinn and others had suggested.

Being a former mayor, I know the type of tough budget cuts municipalities are making in order to make ends meet and I strongly asserted that the state government should do the same rather than on the backs of municipalities.

The personal property tax however was by cut approximately $15 million, in which it should be noted that municipalities could feel a slight pinch from that.

The Illinois Senate adjourned just shortly after midnight on its last scheduled session day.  Senate Bill 335, along with several other pieces of legislation, now goes to Governor Quinn for approval.
