York Guidance Counselor Promoted to Assistant Principal for Student Services

In addition to developing programs at York, Karla Goldman has published a children's magazine, worked as a fund-raiser for Children's Hospital and practiced law.

Karla Goldman, a guidance counselor at York High School since 2007, was promoted to assistant principal for student services at York.

Her re-assignment was approved as part of the consent agenda at Monday's School Board meeting.

As guidance counselor, Goldman created the freshman mentoring program, and developed and coordinated the York Ambassador program, in which more than 150 students participate. She also designed a transfer student program and coordinated York’s Challenge Day for students, staff and community.

Prior to working in education, Goldman co-founded and published Just Write, a magazine written for kids, by kids. She led in-service programs in schools to promote an interest in writing and managed all aspects of the magazine from content to publication.

Goldman holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Illinois (1982), a master’s degree in school counseling from National Louis University (2007), and a Type 75 endorsement from National Louis (2011).

She also holds a juris doctor degree from Loyola University School of Law (1985). She practiced with the Chicago firm of Rosenthal and Shanfield for two years in the business litigation area.

Since 1991, she has volunteered as a co-founder and board member of Kindness is Doing Something Special for Kids Inc., an auxiliary of Children’s Memorial Hospital. She served as chairman of various events that have raised more than $5 million for the hospital to date.
