Group Formed to Help York High School Students Pay New Fees

In an effort to offset the combined effects of the economic environment and significant fee increases for York High School students and families, a group of parent volunteers, students, faculty members and York Principal Diana Smith have formed the York Student Enrichment Team.

“In the face of another tight District 205 budget, parents are shouldering more costs associated with enriching, school-based activities,” Smith said.  “At the same time, many Elmhurst families are impacted by the recession; layoffs and a tough hiring climate are taking their toll.  Students may have to limit their course selection or extra-curricular activities for economic reasons.”

YSET, guided by York’s Student Services team, will direct donations to families in need. A family might qualify for $100 to $500 or more, depending on circumstances and the number of students enrolled. YSET’s initial fund-raising target is $100,000 by the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, although the need may greatly exceed that amount.

For the 2011-12 school year, York High School families will see increases in fees for elective classes and enriching school activities like music and athletics. For example, for the first time, families will pay fees for courses in business, industrial technology, family and consumer sciences and art; fine arts (band, chorus and orchestra) at the high school level; and after-school transportation. Fees for all sports also were increased, and book fees continue to rise.

“The Elmhurst community takes pride in the excellent comprehensive education our children receive in District 205 and has a historical commitment to helping those in need,” said former District 205 School Board member and committee co-chairman Deb Conroy. “YSET is committed to equal opportunity for both a quality education and to extracurricular activities. In fact, research shows that involved and active students do better in their academics and graduate at higher rates.”

The York Booster Club has pledged a substantial donation to YSET and the York faculty is establishing a voluntary payroll deduction program to contribute to YSET as a display of support for its mission. Longer term, YSET anticipates an economic recovery and a revised District 205 budget, which minimizes student fees.

Tax deductible donations can be directed to YSET via Elmhurst District 205 Foundation either by check or on the Web.

“We are pleased to join in partnership with YSET to ensure equal access to these enriching student experiences,” said Foundation Board President Stephanie Fowler. “It’s a community commitment.”

If you are, or if you know of, a family experiencing financial hardship, contact YSET by emailing accessyork@elmhurst205.org, or call 630-617-2404.  Any financial requests will be screened and verified, and reports tracking donations and student grants will be made to the District 205 Foundation.
