Students' Winter Break Extended For At Least One Day

Extreme weather conditions prompt school leaders to cancel school on Monday, Jan. 6.

All classes, activities and offices at Elmhurst College have been canceled for Monday, Jan. 6, according to the college's website. Classes will resume Tuesday, unless otherwise noted.

It's official. All Elmhurst public and private elementary and high schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 6, due to extreme weather conditions. 

Word of Elmhurst District 205 closing came at 2:45 p.m. Sunday. 

From District 205 Superintendent Dave Pruneau: 

"Due to the extreme weather conditions, school is being cancelled for tomorrow. Please note that any student who receives transportation through District 205, including those who attend the Technical Center of DuPage and out-of-district special education programs, will not be transported as a result. Students who are affected will receive an excused absence."

All after-school and evening activities also will be canceled. For updates, please check the District website at or call (630) 834-4530 after 2 p.m. Monday.

Also closed tomorrow are Timothy Christian Schools, Visitation Catholic School, Immanuel Lutheran School, Immaculate Conception Grade School and IC Catholic Prep.

College of DuPage will also be closed; information about Elmhurst College's status for Monday was not immediately available.

High winds and bone-chilling temperatures are expected to hit the area tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning that extends from 6 p.m. Sunday through noon on Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to hit 50 below zero.

So far, no schools have announced cancellations for Tuesday. Information about school closings also can be found on the Emergency Closings website.
