Students from York, IC Catholic Prep Awarded Brian Wagner Scholarships

Three $2,500 scholarships awarded in the name of 16-year-old Brian Wagner, who was killed in 1993

The Brian E. Wagner Scholarship Fund continues its mission to encourage high school students to serve as leaders in their community by exercising sound judgment and committing themselves to volunteer programs that have a positive impact. Brian’s tragic passing in 1993, at the age of 16, was the inspiration behind the organization. His story and commitment to excellence is remembered in the lives of the recipients, who have diligently served and represented Elmhurst throughout their high school experience.

The 2012-'13 recipients of the $2,500 scholarship have been definitive examples of perseverance, integrity and humility, and are headed towards bright futures in their college education.

"We have selected three excellent students—Joe Frost, Kristen O’Malley and Patrick Headley—to receive Brian's scholarship," BEWSF Director Mike Wagner said. "This is the culmination of the efforts of our foundation—to be able to help deserving students in their quest for knowledge."

At York High School, BEWSF Vice President Mark La Shure proudly awarded the second annual scholarship to Kristen O’Malley and Joe Frost.

"I hope to continue Brian’s legacy by showing the same dedication, enthusiasm for life, and effort in all that I do," Kristen said. "I plan to be an active member of the cross country and track teams at Augustana College and will continue to volunteer in the surrounding community.”

“No scholarship was more meaningful to me than the BEWSF Award," said Joe, who will be attending Indiana University and double majoring in business and political science. "I can’t even begin to thank the Wagner family and the entire BEWSF board for how much they do for the foundation. I will do everything I can to promote the values of hard work and leadership that Brian lived his life by.”

At IC Catholic Prep, BEWSF Director Dan Gibbons granted a scholarship to Patrick Headley, who is enrolled at John Carroll University and will major in mathematics.

“Receiving the BEWSF award is a true honor because I have a new inspiration to serve the community more," Patrick said. "In addition, I would like to thank all the contributors and supporters of the BEWSF.”

BEWSF Committee members thank their loyal supporters and express sincere gratitude to everyone who continues to build the cause in Brian’s name. They look forward to continuing the tradition of recognizing gifted young leaders who typify Brian Edwin Wagner’s potential, compassion and determination.
