Prom Goers—and Any Teen Looking for a Formal—Invited to Pay Less at York High School Event

Getting dressed up to attend a high school prom or a school dance is a big deal. But, the cost of formal wear can be overwhelming. The York PTSA invites families to Pay Less for the Dress at the second annual prom dress and accessory giveaway from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the York High School Commons.

Girls ages 13 to 18 can select from more than 400 new and gently-used dresses in a variety of styles and sizes. Dress shoes, handbags and other accessories are in stock to finish the look. Dresses are free, but limited to one dress per customer. 

Discount coupons are also available from Dulles Cleaning Co., J’s Tailoring,   Studio 46, and Topiary Floral Designs.

“We easily have more than $40,000 worth of dresses available to make sure everyone has a chance to look their best for prom or even for graduation, homecoming, family weddings and other dressy occasions,” said Barb Deane, committee chairman for the event. “It’s such a thrill to see the look of joy on a young woman’s face when she finds her perfect dress.”

Deane’s daughter Miranda, a senior at York, invested more than 150 hours planning last year’s event as part of her quest for the Girl Scout Gold Award. York freshman Jack Rodgers built 15 clothes racks to hold all the dresses as his Boy Scouts Eagle Scout Award project.

Donations Accepted

It’s not too late to clean out your closets and donate new or gently used long and short party dresses from homecomings, proms, graduations, weddings or other dressy events. Dress shoes and handbags are welcome, too. Cash donation also accepted to help fund the purchase of dresses in less-common sizes.

Donations accepted at the York attendance office; Mindy's Classic Finds, 107 E. Vallette in Elmhurst; or at 304 N. Addison Ave. in Elmhurst.
