New District 205 Hire is a Social Studies and ELL Specialist

New coordinator will work out a consistent curriculum for English language learners districtwide and align social studies curriculum to prepare students for global economy.

Elmhurst District 205 School Board confirmed the hiring last month of Karen Garibay-Mulattieri as the new District 205 coordinator for social studies and English language learning.

She plans to work with teachers in District 205 to provide ELL students with a research-based program delivered consistently across the district. In the area of social studies instruction, Garibay-Mulattieri is meeting with teachers to align the curriculum and develop pacing guides to prepare students for undergraduate studies and their future work in a global economy.

Garibay-Mulattieri comes to Elmhurst from Cicero District 99, where she served as assistant superintendent for student services for the past three years.

Prior to that, she served District 99 as director of ELL, where she managed a staff of 200 who provided ELL and bilingual instruction to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. She also was an elementary principal in Batavia School District 101 for two years and worked for the Illinois State Board of Education as a division administrator for ELL. Prior to that, she worked in West Chicago School District 33, West Aurora District 129 and Elgin Unit District 46, all in ELL-related positions over an 18-year time span.
 
Garibay-Mulattieri also advises the Illinois State Board of Education on initiatives involving culturally and linguistically diverse students.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and bilingual education (1980) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a master’s degree in school administration (1997) from Concordia University in River Forest.
