Immaculate Conception High School Hires New Athletic Director

New AD has extensive background in special education, coaching and administration; makes the move to Elmhurst from Mount Carmel in Chicago.

Immaculate Conception High School is welcoming Tom Schergen as its new athletic director. Schergen, who most recently served as a special education program director and head boys varsity soccer coach at Mount Carmel High School, also was athletic director for Marist High School in Chicago from 2007 to 2011.

ICHS President and Principal Pamela Levar cited Schergen’s professional skills, energy, integrity and enthusiasm for Catholic education as some of the key attributes that led to his selection as new athletic director.

“I am honored to have a successful, proven leader such as Tom Schergen join our administrative team as athletic director,” she said in a prepared statement.  “He understands the importance of athletics in a private high school setting. It’s not all about the win/loss record; its success lies in developing leadership and excellence in young men and women.”

Schergen said he sees an opportunity to be part of a successful team and a close knit family.

“I am excited to join the Immaculate Conception High School family and look forward to contributing to the strong academic and athletic traditions of the school,” he said. “The family atmosphere at IC is evident from the moment you walk in the door, and that makes it a special place to me.”

Schergen earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Illinois State University, and went on to earn a master's degree in educational administration from St. Xavier University.

He began his career as a special education teacher and athletic director at Maria High School in Chicago. He also served as the head varsity girls soccer coach while at Maria. In 2004, Schergen moved to Bremen High School in Midlothian, where he continued teaching special education and became assistant to the athletic director while also acting as head coach for the varsity boys soccer team and assistant coach for the varsity girls soccer team.

From 2007-2011, Schergen served as athletic director for Marist High School in Chicago, where he oversaw 25 athletic programs for more than 1,000 boys and girls.  During his time at Marist, Schergen was instrumental in developing new leadership programs for his student athletes and was named IADA Division Athletic Director of the Year in 2011. He also was heavily involved in the renovation of both Marist's indoor and outdoor athletic facilities.

Schergen’s appointment at ICHS is effective July 1.
